LM Crunch = emergency sawzall kit
on: July 12, 2009, 04:52:26 AM
Here's something I came up with years ago and hopefully some of you will find it useful. The goal was to come up with a variable style saw blade kit that was as small and light as possible to fit into BOBs, survival kits, etc...
I started with sawzall blades because they come in so many varieties; almost any type of saw style you could require. My next challenge was to find a practical handle. I have always carried a Leatherman Crunch in my bag as a secondary multi-tool and I chose it to be my "handle".

To complete the kit you must modify the base of the sawzall blades. I used a cut-off wheel on my dremel to do this. You first cut off the little tang that sticks out and then you cut a notch into the hole back there. The picture should explain it better than I did.

You mount the blade in the Crunch by clamping it in place with the wire cutting jaws fitting into the notch/hole of the saw blade. The cutting jaws in the notch prevents the saw blade from rotating out of the pliers when you put downward pressure on it while sawing. Again, I hope the picture explains it better.

To illustrate it's usefulness I grabbed a 10D nail and ripped through it in less than 10 seconds, as you can see below. Extended use of this saw would require gloves to prevent blisters but gloves should be in your kit anyway.

I currently carry 3 different 5" blades (a hacksaw, a remgrit, and a wood saw) and a bigger 8" pruning saw for things like shelter building. These take up virtually zero space and weight in my bag but they can do big work in a pinch.

Your feedback is welcome  :D

Great idea mate, especially stopping the saw rotating by using the wire cutter.

Thanks for sharing :) :tu:

Ahh, good idea making it engage the cutting jaws. :tu: I wouldn't have thought of that.
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

Good idea i think it would be also useful with plain old Vice Grip pliers.

I think Alcohol, Tabacco and Firearms should be a convenience store, not a government agency.
