Bent me screwdriver
on: July 19, 2009, 01:47:49 PM
I was in a hurry at work yesterday, getting an air rifle kit ready for an impatient customer. I chose the Swisstools smallest slot head driver to remove a stubborn foresight screw and .... the blade twisted  ::) My fault completely as the driver was a very poor choice for that screw. Annoyed I was, but it's like new again after a little TLC. As for the air rifle, well, it's sleeping with the fishes off the end of Cromer Pier!!  >:D  :D

Glad to hear you were able to sort out the driver mate.  I've never had a Vic breakage but I've heard the customer service is very good so you've always got that option should you need it.

What did you do to fix the driver in the end?

I should have taken pics really. The driver blade was bent/twisted. I clamped the driver tip in a small vice and straightened it by turning the whole tool in a clockwise direction. The cosmetics were taken care of with a sharpmaker stone, some 1500 wet and dry and a little Autosol. Good as new  ;)

You can hire a diver to put up a sign down there that reads "Here lies all the air rifles and pistols that have ticked off Chris in his pursuit of client satisfaction" for posterity and also for later archeologist who may stumble upon the mound years later.  :D

Good of you to fix it, I would have went ballistic. (sorry bad pun there).
A little Leatherman information.

Funny thing is that I was going to say I've done exactly the same thing to the small driver on my Leatherman Supertool.  :P  Like you Chris I managed to straighten it out again.  :D

This has nothing to do with this topic. rp252 that is a great black and white pic in your signature. Magic glad to hear you were able to fix your driver. I do the same sort of thing myself i have a hollow ground gunsmithing screwdriver set and countless screwdrivers but when given the chance to use a SAK or multi tool i can't resist.

Exactly!

Saw this sig on same blade forum or other:
"I'd rather have a dull knife than a broken knife."

Generally, I'd rather touch up the edge of a blade with softer steel a little more often, than have a harder blade that needs less frequent touch ups, but has the potential to chip out or even crack.
