Need some help IDing this Wenger.

Need some help IDing this Wenger.

I found a Wenger at the local pawn shop. They took off some money due to the condition (rough metal at the corkscrew and slightly broken on edges scales). I got it for 2 bucks.

I tried to ID it on Sakwiki to no avail. I assume it is a traveler. I have quite a few of those, but there are some differences and I am uncertain if its due to the age, or the model. I need some help.


It is very similar to the travelers that I have tool wise. What I can tell that is different are:

1. The Wenger symbol has a orange background as opposed to red on the new Traveler.
2. The blades have the Wenger script on one side of the blade, however it is lacking the W symbol on the backside of the blade tang like on the new Travelers.
3. The nail file is facing opposite sides to each model as seen in the photographs.
4. There is a key chain attached to the pawn shop Wenger. The new one has only a split O ring.
5. The Pawn Shop Wenger has no place for a tweezer or toothpick.

Am I correct in assuming it is a Wenger Traveler? How old do you think it might be?

Dang. Guess I can only assume it is an older Traveler then.  :(

I have a traveler with the chain. But everything else about my Traveler is the same as the new one, including toothpick and tweezers. Could you have gotten some sort of "Eco" Traveler? Where's Neil?

I'm certain it's an age thing.  Wenger changes the nail-file surface to the other side to prevent it scratching on the blade, very sensible IMO.  Also the tang stamp is only one sided on the older ones.  The chain was kicking around the Wenger line-up for quite a long time though and seems to have only been dropped totally in the last few years.

This 1991 catalogue seems to show the same Traveler as your pawnshop one.

By 2002 the Traveler seems to have the toothpick and tweezers included.

Well I shall give the old SAK a nice restful home.

And to think I almost let this one pass because of some minor cosmetic chipping on the edge of the scale at both ends.
