1. Different blade styles for different tasks. The tips are generally different to offer saftey or more cutting area or better penetration or whatnot, and shorter blades offer more control.

2. I don't really whittle (is that what you're asking?) but most whittling knives include 3 styles, whatever you find best to use, I guess.

3. Digging, scraping, poking holes, anything you don't want to do to your knife tip.

Two blades:  One can be used as a backup, food prep, emergency, etc.

Whittling:  You can whittle with any blade, but some do it better than others.

Awl:  An awls can be used for poking things, starting holes in wood or leather, basically a knife tip saver.

Hope that answers your questions.

Some awls can also be helpful at loosening knots in rope or paracord.
This is called a Swiss Army Knife. Do you know what Switzerland is? Switzerland is a place where they don't like to fight, so they get people to do their fighting for them while they ski and eat chocolate. - Larry David

Hi darkhawk,

There are a number of slipjoint whittler patterns floating around in different configurations. One that looks particularly interesting has wharncliffe, coping, and pen blades (Case's seahorse whittler). Of course, you can also pick up dedicated whittling tools, but I prefer to use whatever happens to be in my pocket at the time, usually a peanut or some such. I haven't tried whittling with a multi, but I can't imagine it would be very comfortable.

Two blades: lots of folks use only one of the blades for everyday cutting chores and keep the second blade on reserve, using it only rarely when a razor sharp edge is required.
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

I guess you are talking about SAK? If so I keep the main blade as usual edge angle for most tasks, but small blade extremely acute, which would dull and damage easily but also very very sharp.
