Bought a ToolClip Locally today.
on: July 29, 2009, 02:49:55 AM
Walked into my local Army Surplus today, and came out with a SOG ToolClip.

I probably paid too much @ $75, but I had a giftcard burning a hole in my wallet!

This thing is built like a brick $h^t house!!  The pliers seem real beefy, and I like the fact the pliers are kinda like a fixed blade, always ready for action!

Really like it, just thought I would share.

Congrats on your new purchase.  The Toolclip is an excellent tool.

You're right about army surplus stores.  Many have some really nice items but they can be a bit overpriced.  I once wandered into a local army surplus store last winter and found the display cabinet had lots of discontinued multi-tools and knives gathering dust (Charge Ti, Xti, etc.)  Unfortunately, the prices were marked up to outrageous levels.  ($175-$200 for the Charges) :(

Not unlike the local place here having a Mini for $100; likewise, a NIB KF4 was the same price... I'm happy I purchased my KF4 for $40 at TJ Maxx. >.>;  With that said, the owner of the place here is a jerk, anyway, and impolite to his customers. ._.

Same with the owner of the army surplus store I visited.  One guy was friendly and helpful (since it was first time in the store and didn't know where everything was) but the guy watching the knife and tool cabinet was really cranky.  At least they're better than that army surplus store owner from the movie "Falling Down".

Well, let's just say the owner, when questioned about a gold coin my father was interested with, stood there and told him that - paraphrased slightly - he didn't care if he sold the damn coin or not.  Oh, and calling me a liar when I mentioned to him that some of the Cadet colors were discontinued... and that the old Soldier was most likely to be discontinued with the creation of the new Soldier. -_-

Based on my own experiences, that sounds exactly like the attitude of most army surplus store owners that I've encountered.  Many have these small "mom & pop" shops and since they own the building, they have no rent to pay and don't need to worry about selling anything.

One time, I went to an army surplus store downtown and it was a complete dive.  I literally couldn't walk 3 feet in front of me as soon as I walked through the front door because there was too much stuff just piled everywhere.  From what I could see, the store had tons of stuff but the storeowner didn't bother to clean the place up.  The store looked like it hadn't been cleaned or made a sale in 20 years.  Out of curiosity, I asked him if he sold multitools and he started rummaging through old coffee cans behind the counter and pulled out a rusty Gerber Flik. "Here's a Gerber-branded multitool.  It's the ones used in the military.  I can let you have it for $100."  :o

Needless to say, I didn't spend too much time in there.

I've noticed the attitude problem at a local store here...waaaaay overpriced, messy, and to top it off, the woman behind the counter told my father that he needed to leave his Dunkin' Donuts coffee on the counter before he entered the store ::)  My father just said "OK I'm sorry :)" and walked back out to the car!  Way to make a sale!

The best army surplus store I've been to is The Army Barracks in Conway New Hampshire...clean, well lit, lots of new items as well as old, tons of knives, a dozen or so tools, and great prices (aside from the multitools, they are always expensive at these places!)...just for instance, a surplus entrenching shovel here would be around $7, whereas the "other" place would be $25 for a tool in worse condition..

enjoy your toolclip.  I picked one up last year and quite like it.  It clips to the pocket so no sheath required.  Watch when you use the pliers though.  I've pinched my skin using them as sometimes the flesh gets caught between the handle and the frame.  :-[

That's funny, the army surplus store here has a-hole behind the counter as well! Seems to be a trend doesn't it.
