Survivorman check
on: July 23, 2009, 01:45:27 AM
Just watching the old "Boreal Forest" episode (the first episode of the show, I guess).  Trying to figure out what SAK Les is using.  I think it's a Camper.  It's a 91mm,  has a saw, and a corkscrew.  The only thing that pops into my head is the Camper...
 )
(I always cringe on this episode, watching him chuck his guts after trying to eat those tubers...  Yeesh....  :P )

I've just looked at the opening credits and you get a brief but good look at the back of the SAK in his hand.  To my eye it looks thicker than a Camper.  A Huntsman would be my guess maybe even a Ranger.  I'll watch the whole episode tomorrow as it's far to late right now.

The knife did look fairly thick.  Couldn't really get a clear view of how many layers it had.  It looked like a 91mm model to me, but then...  The only things I saw being used were the main blade and the saw.  And you could see the corkscrew when he put the knife down.  I couldn't see a hook on the bottom, but...  Well, you know...

They're running the second season "Behinds the Scenes" episode right now on Discovery Science Channel.  Interesting to see all the local experts Stroud is working with all using different knives.  I'm not quick/clever/knowledgeable enough to identify them, though.

Though, I just caught the bit where they showed the Waorani guide in the Amazon using what looked like a 111mm Vic.  Again, couldn't tell the model, but the shape was pretty distinct...

Fun stuff...   :D

Just catching the rerun at midnight, and got to see a bit on the Labrador episode (which I admit, I skipped).  Showed the backup team having problems with a snowmobile.  The team paramedic is shown pulling the spark plug with a Gerber, either a 600 or a Diesel, I couldn't tell.  (There was a later really quick shot of someone's SAK on a table at the basecamp...  Couldn't tell what it was.)

Funny, Les using a Leatherman, and the team member using a Gerber.   :multi:

Yup, it's a Huntsman.  I just got a good look at it when he's cutting the birchbark into a large "shingle".  Definitely four layers.  You can see it's not a new one either, you get to see that the corkscrew has the fluting on it when he's first showing you what kit he has with him.

Anyone else think it's a shame he dropped Sak's in favour of MT's :-\

Yes.   Actually I can see the point when was simulating a broken down vehicle; snowmobile, plane, bike etc.  I more readily believe that's the sort of tool you might have with you.  I'm not so sure about the other situations though.

Exactly my point :tu:

Your average survivor probably won't have any tools, but if they are carrying one, it'll probably be a Sak :)

So sticking with Sak's would've been far more realistic imo :)

I think you're right, it was a Huntsman.  I watched the 2am rerun of the episode, and caught some close-ups.  It was a fairly thick knife, so I'd say...  (And, as a side note, the knife looked well used, so I have a feeling it was probably Stroud's own knife, not something just picked up for the episode.)

It is kind of a shame he went with the MT over the SAK, but...  His choice, I guess.  I won't argue with him.   :D

I rechecked the MT his crewman was using, and it was a Gerber 600.  The buttons on the side give it away.   :multi:

Kind of in "no-life" mode at the moment, so I went through the FAQ over on www.lesstroud.ca, looking for the various references to knives and MTs.  Here's what I got:

Q: Why do you carry a multitool and not a sheath knife?
Les: Normally I carry both - but for the show I decided I needed the little saw blade for a number of possibilities.

Q: What multi tool do you use?
Les: My favourite multi tool is the Leatherman Wave or Charge. But I haven’t tried them all.

Q: Do you remember what kind of Multi-tool you used in Utah Canyons? From what I saw it didn’t look like a Leatherman wave.
Les:Yes - it was a Leatherman wave.

Q: If you could take only one fixed-blade knife into the bush with you, which would it be? (I have grown to love my ‘Cold Steel SRK’, and literally trust it with my life). Thanks, Les.
Les: I do still love my Buck knife - but I grind down the tip to make it less pointy. But I have been given a lot of knives over the while and enjoy them all.

Q: In two (I think) of your episodes you use a Swiss Army knife, and in the other episodes you use various multi-tools. Any reason why? Or do you just like to try different things.
Les: Yes - was just trying different things - but I still love the Leatherman.

Q: In the season two episodes you were always carrying a sheath knife. What made you want to bring it along with your multi-tool?
Les: To simply allow a few different skills

Q: Which Swiss Army knife did you use on the Georgian Swamp episode? (For example: Hunter, swiss champ, explorer, etc). Thanks Les.
Les: Probably a standard swiss.
