Altoids Tin-possible uses
on: August 02, 2009, 12:13:08 AM
So i was thinking about building a small fire toting tin out of my newly emptied Altoids tin. Ideas for contents would be a magnesium firestick or firesteel, a small vial of flammable liquid, some cotton maybe a bic for back up?

what's your suggestions?

Any other handy uses someone wants to share for Altoids tins?

All the things you've mentioned sound fine.  How about a small tin of Vaseline (petroleum jelly) and some bicycle tire inner tube?  Some strike anywhere matches wouldn't be out of place.

Here's what I stuck in one.

Also now has a couple of pain killers and a needle and thread.

what's the tire inner tube for?  I'm guessing the vaseline aids in keeping the fire lit?  Or >:D :pok:

Put the Vaseline on the cotton balls and they will catch fire and burn for a good amount of time.  The rubber will also burn very well even if wet.

Hand sanitizer works as well plus it kills two birds with one stone: you can start a fire AND sanitize your hands.   :D

I should also say that all my SAK guts are in Altoids tins, they're just the right size.

omg, that is so cool.  I don't know when I'll ever have the need to launch cheerios at something but I must build one.

I use them all the time for my fire starter stuff.  But I also have an amateur radio license and I know QRP'ers(low power operators) who have built small radios into Altoids tins.
