Protofarmer? You decide.
on: August 05, 2009, 04:11:55 AM
I've finally got around to posting a thread on this vintage Victorinox.  There is a picture of similar to this knife on the collectors website. The big difference in the 1942 catalog image and my knife is the new style can opener on mine (same as the opener used on Wengers today).  It places my knife between 1946 and 1951 when the newest style can opener came in.
The scales are of a fibrous material.

The saw is of a very interesting design.  Note the location of the nail nick.

The awl is a solid spear, rounded on it's outer surface

The tang stamp first was used in 1943 (according to the collector's site)

Not much more to say, but I'm curious what folks have to say about the cracks in the scales and whether there's a way to prevent further cracking.

I like that clip point blade shape, I wish Vic would produce a few models like that again.

I'd suggest keeping the knife in a place where the temperature is constant...getting hot/cold/hot/cold might mess up the scales further.  Is it that bakelite stuff?

That is gorgeous mate

As for the scales, I'd be inclined to glue them discretly at the base of the split :)
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

Nice piece  :tu:  Unless you were planning on using it <eek> I'd not do anything with the split.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

That's a beauty.  I'm with Neil, unless you actually see the spits getting worse I'd just leave them be.

Its a great looking tool mate :tu:

I think the crack adds to the character of the tool.  I would leave it as it is :)
