What's the best way to de-grease a SAK ?
on: August 23, 2009, 12:22:46 AM
I'm trying to remove all traces of the original oil from a new SAK. is there any easy way of doing this ?
Would dipping it in white spirit do the trick ?

Warm water and washing up liquid and get scrubbing.  You got me curious, why do you need to remove the original oil?
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Doh, silly question really :D

Yeah, scrub with warm water and soap, then rinse, repeat and rinse with cold water from a previously boiled kettle. Finally I'd wipe the area with propan-2-ol (or tape head cleaner if the local pharmacist looks funny at you when you ask for a small bottle ;) ).  Be warned the alcohol will wreck scales so remove those first.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Since you'll have to remove scale anyway, use brake cleaner. There is no oil it won't dissolve.

Electric motor cleaning spray should do the trick nicely, and it's is safe to use on all plastics and leaves no residue.

To remove congealed oil and grit, I soak the knife in mineral spirits(scales removed). After a soak blast with compressed air to blast out grit and spirits. I re-oil with CLP , install scales and good as new. :tu:

Acetone is excellent for making gunk go away.
