Skeletool CX spotted without serration
on: August 26, 2009, 04:47:43 AM
I was looking on the Leatherman website and I noticed the Skeletool CX now without serration.
Anyone  spotted this one in "the wild" already?

I have seen them out in the wild so to speak and the regular skeletools are now shipping with serrations as I have one.

I've complained in the past about the cost of the Skeletool but a Skeletool CX with a plain blade MAY just be good enough for me to open up my wallet a little. I don't know, I'm actually enjoying my Kick that I won from Chako.

I have read your complains before  and I think you are right  for that money one better by a wave.
Than again you pay $170 for a skeletool CX in an average European shop.....
I think I have to wait until this plain edged version will show up at the webshops/fleebay

The regular model is already switched over but the CX is still a month or so away from having it's new blade.  That could change though since it's all based on LM running out of it's current inventory.

This is the change I have been waiting for as well. Hopefully it will be widely available with PE by Christmas this year.

Does anyone know where I can pick one of these up? I've been searching but I cannot find one. Like I said, I think the regular Skeletool is overpriced compared to the number of tools on it but for premium steel I might consider it.

So far I've only found this through Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Leatherman-Multi-Tool-Skele-tool-Sharpening-Quick-Release/dp/B001CW4RFY/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1253150703&sr=8-6

It's basically a bundle sold through a 3rd party. A lot of little extras, but pricey.

I haven't tried it Jim, but I'm pretty sure they are interchangable. :)

I had the same issue and question, here is what I found; you can get both!!

Leatherman Skeletool Cx 830849 - Plain edge

Leatherman Skeletool Cx 830850 - Combo edge

....and my 2 cents - in my experience with EDC on a blade this small the serrations are pretty much useless.

not sure if I am allowed to say this but...I found the plain edge CX on amazon for 62 bucks US

Hi Marucusu,

The product numbers (SKU) remained the same despite the blade change.  Was one of the ones you saw either in a clam pack or did one come without a sheath?  Either of those could be the reason for the different product numbers.

Best - Joe

Hello,

I work in a shop in New Zealand that sells Leatherman tools, and noticed the new Skeletools that came in last week (no doubt NZ is behind in receiving these). We usually don't stock the Skeletool CX, but I know that it used to have the serrated blade, and the regular Skeletool the straight blade.

So now they have been swapped around? I'm not much of a knife expert, but I always thought the upgraded and more expensive CX had the better blade - serrated in the past. So now we've decided that the straight blade is better? If that's true, does that make the older regular Skeletool that I own better than the new ones coming out?

Unrelated, I also noticed they come with a new nylon pouch with a hole in the bottom. What's the reason for this?
The new box design is also nice!

The one thing that's consistent about the old and the new CX blades is that they're made from higher quality 154CM steel, so the old Skeletool PE blade is inferior to the new CX PE blade. Whether PE is better than serrated is a preference thing really, and I think Leatherman decided that they got it wrong first time around.

The hole in the bottom in the sheaths are to allow you to carry your Leatherman with the pliers open :)

Welcome to the forum

Thanks for the very quick replies.

Ah, the sheath makes sense. I'm sure I must have heard of it before.

As for the blade, I completely forgot about the steel being different. I read that many prefer a straight edge over the serrated as it makes for a cleaner cut. Personally, I don't actually get a lot of use from my blade, so I'm happy. Usually just small things like opening boxes where the serrated part wouldn't even get used.

I only really take my Skeletool out when going walking and weight is important, and I feel the part serrated blade is my best option then (simply because it gives me an option in a lightweight frame). There's a good chance that I'll be swapping down to a Freestyle soon though, as I've not yet needed a screwdriver whilst out and about.

Well, the Skeletool is the only tool I own, and is always on my belt wherever I go. I certainly like some of the larger tools, but to be honest I don't really do a whole lot that would require one.

PS, what are your thoughts on the Gerber Crucial? We just got one in today, and I really quite like it. I really like the look and feel of it, though I much prefer the bit driver on the Skeletool. Much easier to access.

It's a cost saving measure.  The blades on the Freestyle models were the complete opposite as the blades on the Skeletool models.  Why Leatherman decided to do that with the Freestyle is a mystery.  Since both MT's are very close in design it only makes sense to use the same blades on both CX models and standard models to save money.

Got my CX today and all I can say is WOW!  A friend of mine let me check out his regular skele and I am convinced mine is better.  The straight 154CM blade is every bit as good as my charge even though it is a little shorter.  I'm not working so I can't really check it out but I am sure I can dig up something to do in my workshop.  Feels like they built this thing for my hand!
