SOG Powerlock 1/4" Drive Problem
on: July 16, 2009, 04:36:26 AM
Hi all,

I just recently purchased my SOG PowerLock and I absolutely love it. I have a problem with the 1/4" drive though, for some reason the spring that holds the socket in place keeps falling off on me and I am lucky I have not lost it yet. I have made sure when installing the spring that it is placed correctly in the groove and in the proper slots. I was using the phillips screwdriver today on my friends car while I was on my back and the spring fell out next to my ear. Is there a trick to making sure the spring stays in place because it will suck if it disappears when I actually go to use it. Please let me know what you think.

Thanks,

Larry T.

Hi Larry, welcome to the forum.  If you gently bend the pin, it should be more snug and won't fall out.  If that doesn't work, you can contact SOG customer support and they will gladly send you a replacement pin which should be a better fit.

This is called a Swiss Army Knife. Do you know what Switzerland is? Switzerland is a place where they don't like to fight, so they get people to do their fighting for them while they ski and eat chocolate. - Larry David

I would take the spring out and bend it "in" a little, then put it back on the driver.  It should make for a tighter fit.

Sorry,

I just got home from work. I bent the clip in and and it seems to be holding good. I have used it a lot the past couple of days and I like it. I have quite a few good multi tools and this one seems to be holding it's own. I have been carrying a Leatherman original PST for I while. I liked it because it was small and it had everything that I use for the most part. I will definitely give the SOG a good run. I do like my Schrade ST1 the best(at least so far) but the problem is the ST1 is to wide to carry on the belt along with my Surefire 6PL and the cell. I have cut chain links on the kids swing set with the cutter on the ST1 (like butter). The SOG will probably be my favorite, Just give me some more time to use it :) I was thinking about buying the Leatherman Charge XTi  but money was a little short. I got the SOG and the leather holster for $22.00 shipped brand new from eBay and I think the quality and tool compliment are just as good as the Leatherman.

Hi, broncoman529, so nice to heard you to get a SOG tools. It s a really nice tool. Though I have bought Leatherman Ti, WAVE, Gerber tools, buck tools and many swiss knives, I like SOG powerlock most and EDC it about 1 years. About the 1/4" Drive I think I will put a magnet into the 1/4" socket adapter if I lost the spring and I already bought several pieces of magnets from the web for it!
I saw you use SF 6PL. I also like to collect torch. Now I EDC XENO G5 V3 torch with CREE Q35C LED and 18650 battery. Normally I put the torch inot my pocket and use the nylon sheath from Magforce to carry my Powerlock on the belt.
Hope to get more info from you about the experience of POWERLOCK!

Glad you got the spring to stay,

this seems like a good place to ask
has anyone gotten the SOG bit addapter, Is there and advantege to getting the SOG one.  I was using a 1/4" drive socket 1/4" bit for my addapter.
Just woundering if there is something I am missing here is all.

I got a few bits that are 2 / 5 " long so I got this socket/addapter and these longer bits and it works like nice to have the extra length.

the only benefit the sog adapter has over a regular socket is that it has a spring that holds the bit in, which a socket wouldnt have.

well no matter what it is it will hold in the bit and ya that is better than a standard socket.

But I am loving the long bits I got really nice to use.

Hi,

when I got my (used) SOG, the clip was missing. I've called SOG for them to send me one, and mentioned that I might lost it again.
They kindly send me a new clip for free, and told me that a small amount of glue (like crasy glue) will definitively help to solve that issue if it too loose.

I guess bending a little bit can help, too, as PyroJames suggests.

Hope this helps !

Does seem a bit odd that a manufacturer would recommend gluing their product in order to keep it together doesn't it

Sorry to add on to this so late, but I had the same problem with my BO 2.0.  My spring clip dropped off, and I made a bit of a fuss and the sent me a new one.  I had asked in my email if this was a problem that they regularly encountered, as it seemed like a design in need of some more thought.  They responded that this generally wasn't an issue they encountered.  Could be they were feeding me a line, but after bending my second clip a bit, and jamming it on the BO socket adaptor, I haven't had the sucker fall off.
