Am I the first to suggest the Colt Peacemaker?  Surely the Cowboy gun of the silver screen.

I'm not a gun person, just by virtue of never having dealt with them, but from watching TV, I'd say the M-16, AK-46 and .45 Magnum are what stand out to me.  After a few more years of Stargate, the P-90 may be a contender as well.

M1911 for pistols and the Thompson for submachine guns sounds about right for America atleast. AK-47's get a lot of exposure on the international level though.

+2. Still the most natural pointing handgun I've ever held. Yes there are more effective guns out there but nothing gives my soul peace of mind like a Peacemaker(or clone) loaded with 5 beans in the wheel sitting on your hip. I'm sure most gunfights are won by whoever hits 1st and with practice the ole Peacemaker is still one of the fastest.

Lee Enfield, Mauser G/K 98 and the Moisin Nagant :)

Two generations + of killing there :-\

During WW2 a lad in my Dad's village stole a Lee Enfield and some hand grenades from the Home Guard and used them for catching salmon. He got caught and his dad was sent home from fighting for the subsequent trial.  While the father was back in Britain his unit was almost wiped out, so his life was probably saved by his son's criminality.

I heard a similar story from a Vietnam Vet. I was at VA(veterans hospital) talking to this guy. He said he was a truck driver and had a drive he took every day for months. One day he went to sick call(or something like that, it kept him away for a day). So that day another driver took his duties. Well, the truck was attacked that day, killing the replacement driver. The guy who I talked to said he still has a lot of survivors guilt from that.

""During WW2 a lad in my Dad's village stole a Lee Enfield and some hand grenades from the Home Guard and used them for catching salmon.""

In the 1960's while serving in a USAF EOD team we used " DuPont Spinners "  for fishing all the time.

1/4 pound block of TNT, safety wired to a brick and 3 feet of waterproof fuse.

Drop it overboard and wait for the fish to rise to the surface.

We got a lot of fresh fish to eat

Acutely I just thought the double barrel shotgun (side by side brake action) and the pump action where Iconic, it was on about shotguns.

I just thought they where because with the double barrel, it started the term “riding shotgun” and when I think Shotgun wedding it is what I think off, and the something about the sound of a pump.

Actually, the term riding shotgun came out before the double barrel.  It came about with the stagecoach.  Anytime there was the threat of attack, from indians or bandits, one guy would sit up front with the driver, manning the shotgun, shooting at whoever was unfortunate enough to attack.  That's why "riding shotgun" means sitting up front with the driver in a car.

the double barrel as we know it came out in 1760- http://armscollectors.com/gunhistorydates.htm

the term came out in 1905 in a book, "shotgun guard" in 1880s- http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2158/whats-the-origin-of-riding-shotgun

and the Coach Gun was a double barrel- http://www.popularmechanics.com/outdoors/sports/1277346.html

The AK is not a POS its a very reliable weapon that is very simple in design.

ok.... it's a very simple reliable design and a poorly made POS.... i do like the cartrige however. truly the redeaming quality all it's own.
the fact that it has been in service for 60 years makes it an icon. it does do the job it was intended for very well. it's greatest claim to fame is that it is cheap or cheaply made. that's not a bad thing but, it is a POS.

When talking about Iconic guns, you gotta mention the M-16, although most military guys HATE those guns.  I have never used one, but from what i hear, it is very unreliable.  Jams and breaks down just when you need it the most.  AK-47 is the prefered gun from what I have been told.  It'll shoot even if it has been buried in the mud or sand for days at a time.  You can't kill em.  AK-47 rules!!
For pistol, i will go with the 1911.  I have one myself.  Great gun to use, big cannon in action, and the military's standard issue for a long long time.  When I think of WWII, the 1911 is one of those images that flashes in my mind's eye.

the early m16 had the problems, the newest ones are far superior to the ak's. The ak's are a very reliable gun but not accurate. I have owned many versions of them, china versions, egyptian models, bulgarian I have had them all. :salute:

One of my favorite for the Russians is the Mosin Nagant M 1895 7.62x38r Revolver.
This revolver was way ahead of its time because when it shoots the cylinder slides forward and seals the cylinder to the barrel. It is only the few revolvers that can be truly sound suppressed.

I forgot to mention, the ammo you see in the pic is live ammo. The bullet is seated back in the casing. When the cylinder slides forward the tip of the case slides into the barrel helping it create the seal.
