So I bought myself a CS4...
on: September 23, 2009, 05:00:31 PM
Despite having bought one previously, and ultimately giving it away, I bought another one. Call me a glutton for punishment, but I wanted a MT with no locking blades, and the kick did not really appeal to me. I still think the blade (on the Juice) is ugly as sin, and the lanyard ring cannot be pulled out with anything short of the jaws of life, but I'm really taking a shine to the little guy.

I was very surprised to discover that the plier jaws on the Juice opened as wide as my Skeletool. At least that's what I saw when I eyeballed them next to each other. I don't have calipers and I didn't measure with a ruler or tape measure.

The can opener still sucks as much as I remember. I actually did manage to puncture a can of dog food twice, but it took some real effort.

The awl is a weird hybrid of Victorinox Alox and Wenger awls; it's not quite pointy, but it looks like it might work very well throwing a spark off a ferro rod. Same goes for the scissors: Vic-ish shape, combined with the Wenger spring mechanism. I like.

The jury's still out on the drivers. I haven't decided on them, although the shorter slotted driver is a pain to get out. It's a nail breaker.

I'm going to EDC it for a little while and see how it feels. I don't think it will replace anything, but it's definitely a fun toy to have.

I love my Juice series tools.  The only thing I'm worried about is the jaws of the pliers seem to loosen up pretty quickly.  I'm a little worried about developing unacceptable play between the jaws.   :-\

I was contemplating getting a CS4 for the longest time, but could not justify the corkscrew and ended up getting a KF4 (love it).

My KF4's pliers feel very fragile, especially at the handle pivots. It feels like I could break the pliers just be squeezing a little too hard on the handles.

Does anyone have a sense of how strong the Juice pliers are? What's the toughest task you have ever used them for?

Nice little review man. I still need to get my girlfriend on of the Juice series. Probably not a corkscrew model though :tu:

I like the juice series of tools as well.  I have a S2 and a XE6.  Nice, light, and compact.  Even they did a
great job on the sheaths!

I have been thinking lately about getting a juice model of some sort.

There are just so many to choose from and I can't really think of where I could use it that I couldn't have a full-size multitool around.

I've noticed it not just in the pliers but in the drivers as well.  When applying a fair amount of torque there is some flex in the handles, but so far nothing has broke or worked loose yet.  The Juice series is a lightweight tool for occassional use only can't compare to any of the larger multitools.  So common sense advised. ;)

I dont have much use for my S2 very often but it sure is nice to look at. I really like that shade of orange on the S2. The Juices are real eye candy.   :D
What? Enablers! Are you serrrrious? Where? I dont see any.

I haven't really noticed any play in the drivers or plier head, but the handles to seem to flex when I squeeze them. The same thing occurs on my Charge as well (haven't really tried this on my other multis). But, I figure it's a lightweight tool; I'm not going to abuse just for grins and giggles. I am definitely interested to see how the drivers hold up, though. I want to see if they do develop play after use.

I've really haven't noticed too much of an issue with my S2.  It "was" a replacement from the original
I bought but the problem I had was more to my "own doing" not the tools.  Yet again though
the Leatherman warranty came through when they needn't have (excellent).

Most of the work I ask a multi to do my Juice series tools are most up to the task.  It's not often I need
a "heavier duty" tool so I will take tools that are lightweight, easy to carry, that I forget are hitched along
for the daily ride.  :)

I'm not really all that sure you can find a bad multi  ::)  All the manufactures seem to make great units.
At least all of the major players anyhow.  ;)

Let me say, I have not had an actual failure with my Juice tools.  Rather, the pliers jaws pivot very freely now (as in NO resistance) and I'm just starting to sense lateral play in the pivot.  They work fine, cut wire fine, but I worry that they are slowly (or not so slowly  :ahhh) heading to failure at the pivot.

Will there be pictures when they fall apart? :D

I sort of know what you're getting at, I think. I've no reason to doubt the Juice, and they seem pretty well put together and all that, but I feel a lot more confident using, say, a PST. I've a few pliers that pivot really loosely, and can picture what you mean.
I used to come here a lot.

Yes, that is a much better description. It is the flex in the handles that made the Juice feel somewhat delicate.

I just played around with the pliers a bit, and I am a little less worried about it now. It was more of a first impression thing.
