The meaning of EDC
on: October 01, 2009, 06:56:07 AM
We all talk about our EDC kit, but what does EDC mean to you?  Is it something you have on you 24/7, even when you sleep, take a shower etc?  Something you just take to work, something you wear when you leave the house, or just when you're in the house.  Is it something else entirely?

To me EDC is something I have on me pretty much all the time.  It varies from item to item; for my keyring tools they're with me 24/7, next to me when I sleep etc.  The SAKs and MTs are in my pockets most of the time, but not all the time (especially with the UK knife laws) - but I still call them EDC.

What do you guys and girls consider the be EDCing something?

To me EDC should mean anything that you actually carry on your person, but the term has grown to mean anything that you may need on a given day. I now include anything that fits in my man purse as part of my EDC setup.  :tu:  I'm not sure if that makes any sense or not?    :D
Sometimes change is a good thing, other times not so much!

Although I don't count what's in the bag edc, since you probably won't have it with you all the time during the day.

If you carry it 98% of the time while you are awake its your EDC.

EDC includes the contents of my bag IMO.  It always leaves the house with me and I'm never more than 5 yards away from it.  I suppose my key-bunch never leaves my side, but being in the same room as my bag counts for me.

What I carry on a daily basis. That is, if it's not on me 7 days a week, it's not EDC. I use the term ADC (All Day Carry) for stuff that I only carry on certain days/occasions...

If an item is in the pockets of my pants nearly all the time, then I would call it an EDC item. I don't empty my pockets when I come home, only when changing cloths or if I need to go a place where certain EDC items are not allowed.

Well, in my mind it depends.

If you always carry your bag, it is, my definition EveryDay Carry.  For example, when hiking/climbing, anything in my pack is EDC because I'll be carrying my pack every day.  My messenger bag is ALMOST EDC, but not quite since I leave it home if I'm not going to the gym.

NEDC, I think (Nearly EDC)

For me it's what ever is on my belt and in my pockets everyday.  It's all on my person as long as I'm awake and have pants on, and it's next to the bed at night, usually still attached to my pants in case I have to run out in the middle of the night.

It's what's in my pockets mostly. The basics I would hardly ever leave the house without.

I do have an extended EDC option which involves the bag - it has bigger stuff and lots of other extras so some of the pocket stuff can be dumped when I have the bag.  :)

I've always got at least one knife, a MT, wallet, phone, keys (with gadgets) and a lighter on me.

What do you guys and girls consider the be EDCing something?

I consider something I don't (like to) leave the house without my EDC.

I don't always have a shirt pocket, and being in a wheelchair (always sitting) I don't trust things to stay in my pants pockets, so for me, it's what I carry in my bag.

EDC to me is anything I have on my person from when I'm up in the morning to when I retire for the night.  I include my watch, wedding ring, cell phone, pen etc among my edc items.  My flashlight, knives and multi tool are the only items which changes for my work edc.

Depending on how much you drive I would consider the stuff you keep in the car EDC as well.  I keep my car well stocked for all the little eventualities, and I consider most of it EDC.
