trying to compair a blast
on: August 31, 2009, 11:44:27 AM
Hey more stupid questions from yours truly. I was bumming around online looking at some leatherman stuff trying to make a choice on which leatherman I would like to start with as I know I will always want more. But I was wondering if anyone could compare a blast or a fuse to the other leathermans like wave, charge, surge, core and ST line. So any info would be helpfull and if there is already a thread like this out there could someone direct me please. I was peeking at the blast and got curios. Thanks again guys and this is a great group I'm glad I joined.

I wholly and heartily recommend a LM Blast

I've never owned a Spirit, but if they're as good as any of Vics other tools, then I have no doubt they are fantastic.

I have owned a LM Wave...the quality is just fine, one handed opening, linerlocking blades, separate serrated & plain edge blades, and bit exchanger (not 1/4" but proprietary additional bits are available) to increase the range of screw types you can ravage, and the famous Leatherman diamond file are the highlights of its features.

the more usual range of Can openers, slot head screwdrivers, scissors & semi-needlenose pliers with wire-cutting blades/notch round out the tool.
with all that, the Wave is Leatherman's Best Seller.

But, with all those points for the opposition, I'm going to still recommend the Blast.

It is, apparently, "Loaded with [their] most requested features,"
The file is regular steel (well, I'm hoping a hard steel, but not diamond is my point)
No serrated blade, no one-handedness.

For all this...standardness, it sets the standard, and is a good entry-level tool for a collector, keen amateur, or serious worker.

As you say, you'll always want more, and you can Always get a Wave later and enjoy it's more premium features, or go to Vic for their shiny shiny finish, but for the current Generation of Multitools, the Blast is the perfect baseline with which to compare all others. Though it does not necessarily have the perks of higher end tools, such as fancy blade materials or outside opening & one-handed blades, It has none of the weaknesses of earlier tools either - No tool clumping, all locking blades/tools, comfortable handles.

Hi,

I think the Blast is a top tool.   Had mine with me at the Cub Scout Pine Wood Derby.  My 40 year old daughter borrowed it numerous time to fix broken pine wood racers, tighten glasses, etc.  She liked it so much that I gave her one for her 40th birthday.

Nice size & weight, reasonable tool selection and very comfortable to use.

Best - Joe

You might find this useful too:

Just choose "Blast" in the first column and Wave, Charge, Surge etc in the following columns!
I used to come here a lot.
