Can I have a STEAK KNIFE please.
on: November 02, 2009, 03:00:07 AM
The 17th of this month I started carrying the Wave and a Classic (so far it seemed to work for me) until yesterday.

When we go out to eat I like to use my own knife to cut my food. Since I only had a Classic and a Wave I considered the Classic to be too small to use and the Wave too big for "public" use.

My wife and 17 yr old son was talking across the table and when the waitress walked by I asked her for a steak knife.

Both stopped their conversation and looked at me and asked "What did you say?"

They had a shocked, dazed look on their face, I then explained to them the ones I had were either too small or too big.

My wife looked at me "You only have two on you whats wrong?"

So now I have come to the sad truth.  As wonderful as a combo of the Wave and Classic are I have to carry a third knife.

Probably be a Cadet or a Soldier or Electrician for three reasons

1) Sometimes you need another blade.

2) My wife counts on me to have extra for her and others. (I can't let my public down).

3) I don't want to freak out my family again :ahhh

LOL thx your reasons made me laugh so hard I choked! :P

I've read a few threads about people bringing and carrying their own special steak knives.
It really sounds like a good idea, sharp, efficient, yours!

some pretty nice ones out there (like mentioned already) but if I knew I was
going for steak, I'd probably bring my WoodsWalker (A.G.Russell)

Where do you live that the Wave is too big for "public" use? If I had to I certainly would have used my Blast to cut steak and that's about the same size as the Wave. But then again I live in the sticks where guys go to Wal-Mart with fixed blades strapped to their sides and no one says anything.

I seem to remember some posts where guys say the OHT is the best for cutting steaks. Serrations on the end make for good cutting.

it probably would work sweet but the problem with folders and food is the eventual gunk and stickiness that would eventually accumulate. it's why I prefer a fixed blade for food.

I've had good results with using my Vic 108mm Solo as a food prep and eating knife. :)

I'd never use my own knife in restaurant, simply because the ceramic plates kills the edge.  :(

You could also sharpen it up by flipping that plate over! :D

Amongst its amazingly broad functionality, the original, serrated OHT makes a very good food prep knife.

Those serrations on the front of the blade just glide through meat, bread, and veggies with ease.  Works just as well as a dedicated steak knife for cutting meat.

OHT blade is long enough to avoid getting gunk up into the pivot area - unless you are a very sloppy eater.

I've used my A.G. Russell fruit testing knife as a steak knife in public before. My girlfriend at the time gave me one of these  ::) but I don't think anyone else noticed and it worked very well. Wiped it down before eating and then another quick wipedown when I was done. No problems, just don't push down so hard and the plate won't do very much to the edge at all.

I go back and forth between thinking this is classy or classless (for myself) but I really wouldn't have a problem with anyone else doing it. These blade styles are pretty much the best picnic/EDC food knife out there. Big enough to cut all common food items and thin enough to be carried very easily and used discretely if needed.

My father's been using his Schrade fruit tester to cut food in public since as long as I can remember, never seen any reaction to his use either.
