I always believed it can be done, but I'm not sure I'd want to risk my only knife.  Better to cut yourself a wedge and use that surely?

Sure it isn't going to be the primary knife you would want to baton with but it's nice to see that it can be done in an extreme situation.  It's funny though, the guy is doing a bushcraft video and you can hear all kinds of civilization noise in the background.  A motorcycle, gun shots, etc.

I fail to see the point of batoning wood that small in diameter. I'd be using the SAK to make a big pile of curls and using that to light the rest.

+ a brazilian.

For stuff that small, whittle some curls and get a roaring fire, tossing those little twigs on the fire.

Interesting, but not all that practical, IMO.

What he is cutting up is called Kindling, I think what you guys are referring to is Tinder.  The way I've always made fires is by starting the Tinder burning first, they add small Kindling to get the fire self sustainable, then add larger wood.  Obviously he could have used twigs but I get the impression he was trying to break a taboo about using a folding knife to baton with.

Again, JMO, but if you get a nice pile of tinder, that small of kindling isn't necessary.  just put on twigs up to about 1 inch diameter.  No need  to split it.

I agree, he could have made things a lot easier by just using twigs but I think he was trying to make more of a point about using a small folding pocket knife to baton with.  All these bushcraft type videos always show the person using a decent size fixed blade, usually at least a 5" blade.  I think he was just doing this video to contradict them.  That was the way I took it, who knows though, I could have taken it the wrong way.  He wouldn't have been able to baton anything too big with a blade that small.

He's basically using a SAK as a mini froe. I've done that before.
