I fail to see the point of batoning wood that small in diameter. I'd be using the SAK to make a big pile of curls and using that to light the rest.

The way I've always made fires is by starting the Tinder burning first, they add small Kindling to get the fire self sustainable, then add larger wood. Obviously he could have used twigs but I get the impression I was trying to break a taboo about using a folding knife to baton with.

Again, JMO, but if you get a nice pile of tinder, that small of kindling isn't necessary. just put on twigs up to about 1 inch diameter. No need to split it.
