I wonder why....
on: November 08, 2009, 06:41:30 PM
Leatherman never did (or do) a pliers based version of the Micra?  They seem happy enough with the Squirt P4, so it can't be a size thing.  Also they seem happy with having the cheaper Micra and the more expensive S4 out at the same time, so it's not like they don't mind having very similar tools out there.  Perhaps I'm missing something (as I don't own a Micra) and it simply can't be done.

Any thoughts?

I have often wondered this. It does seem odd.

I am however convinced that the Squirt S4 was supposed to replace the Micra, but they had a change of heart because people wouldn't stop buying them!

My guess therefore is that rather than producing a pliers-based Micra, the Squirt was intended to be just that, but the original Micra didn't fizzle out the way they hoped.

The Gerber Clutch, Mini Bear Jaws, Squirt P4 and a few other tools demonstrate that the concept works after all!

That was the only line of logic that I could come up with as well.  It does rather seem to shooting themselves in the foot though.  The reason it will still be selling well is that it offers almost the same function as the S4 but at a fraction of the price.  One of the reasons I asked this question was that I would have almost certainly got a pliers Mirca rather than a P4 if one had been available.

But there has to be a market for both the Micra and the S4 or I'm sure one of them would have been dropped, after-all LM have never been sentimental about keeping a tool in production, so perhaps there would be room in their range for a pliers Micra as well.

I just read that back and it's a bit of a ramble, sorry but I can't be bothered to re-write it. ::) ;)

Good question and good answer :D

Perhaps the Core might stay in production as well since they are still selling them and they may very well be selling alot and it would be the same kind of thing that went on with the S4 and Micra  :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :D

Is there enough room to have pliers of acceptable strength in the Micra handles?

I can see getting rid of the useless file on the squirt and putting in a vic classic style scissor for the best of both worlds.

I suppose that was part of my original question as well.  They manage it with the Squirts but, not having one, I don't know for sure it could be done with the Micra.

I would like to see a plier'd version of a Micra too.  I like the plain stainless steel of the Micra.  I have a P4 and an E4 and they are nice but there is something about the simplicity of the stainless steel of the Micra that makes it more appealing to me.  I do have a Micra with blue plastic over the plain stainless steel.  I guess it was their attempt to colorize them.  It looks like it could be easily removed it I ever decided to do so.

One of the attempts! They never did really get it right.

I took this one the other day, and you can see the painted, polycarbonate covered and the anodised aluminium covered attempts.

I agree, the stainless model is the best :)

I completely forgot about the anodized aluminum colored Micra's and I have one of the Red, White & Blue Micra's.    It's the only anodized one I have though.  I only have one polycarbonate one too, it's the blue one.  I think I have 3 or 4 stainless one's though.

Hey Dave I am wondering what are the datecodes of the earliest painted ones? I don't believe that I have ever heard that info on here  :tu:
