I respect anybody who willingly voids their warranty on anything by deliberately tinkering with it.  I've been doing that all my life.  :tu:

EXACTLY.  Never assume the one who manufactures the product is the best able to make it the way you want it.  They make it under money/market constraints, but when you tear it apart and build it anew, you can do whatever you want, even if its isnt financially viable on a large scale.

What's a forum without discussions? Yes, dead! ;)

I'm proud of voiding warranty of some knifes. Especially those with adding wood scales using epoxy. Want to see that service technican repairing a broken spring on such a knife. :-D

I'm waiting for the time when someone sends in their Syph torx pivot mod to Victorinox for a repair and Vic decides that they like the torx pivot so much that they start using them. Or they kidnap Syph and have him set up shop in Switzerland :P.

This is really interesting me. How did you apply the resin to the scales?

I set the scales up sitting on the rim of a paper cup and pour the resin onto them letting it run off the sides, these have 2 coats of resin and then one of clear coat 2-pak

Lets not forget +B first got noticed due to his damascus pioneer mod.  Now he is against mods (at least on his forum).

Go figure

I also dont think he'd get as much support from Vic if he wasnt also a native of switzerland.

I've never really been sure about +B. IMHO, he's basically a modder with Victorinox endorsement. He can make whatever he wants as long as the design is approved by Victorinox so that the warranty can be enforced. Therein lies the rub for him I believe. If he's to stay in Vic's good graces, he couldn't officially support or endorse mods that involve modifying factory parts or combine parts from different knife frames (i.e., pliers/scissors on 93mm alox).

For him to go on any record and support such mods would likely put his status with Victorinox in jeopardy. In other words, knife builds that would not/could not be warrantied due to not being approved by Victorinox. For all we know, he might have a secret stash of Syph/tattoosteve/Bushido mods that he plays with every now and again.

Are you going to make a Geeky Compact model next, Pete? :D  Or is that already in the works?

Wonder if scales could be made with exposed CMOS on a board, or even the various forms of solar cells.

Of course with solar cells a savvy developer could devise a scale LED light with a poly-lithium battery, solar cell, mini rectangular LED and switch all on one scale, and a fakey on the other side with maybe glow in the dark coating on the underside of a panel. If it could float above the attachment scale, could give off an eerie glow without distracting from the outer visual scale appearance.

Might be other substrates of a 3D formation that would look nerdy floating in a resin scale/handle. The possibilities are endless. or you could make a miniature aquarium-like scale, where things float around inside. That would be an interesting project, almost like a snow-globe in effect.

Reminds me of those cheesy stripper pens from the 80's. Held one way the black clothing (cover ups) could be seen, flip the other way and the black clothes would slowly vanish. The graphics were horrible.

Another grey area one...

(Image removed from quote.)

technically it's just an Explorer, but the scales and side liners have been replaced with hand made ribbed aluminium side plates like an alox SAK.

mod or not mod?
Those are beautiful scales on that :). It, to me, gives a finesse to the 91mm frame. When I first started that was my goal, and to anodize them.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

I had a straight 6 with 3 side draft webbers :). Bored 30 over, dome topped racing pistons, blueprinted engine block, dual exhaust, big valves etc etc etc. over $2k in the engine. That thing would fly. I miss that old truck, but not the gas bill ;)
