Re-assembling a Kick: need a spot of help
on: January 06, 2010, 05:52:22 PM
Okay, since "search" isn't finding it for me I'll have to share my little tale:
A while back my little brother found a Kick laying around under the seat of an old tractor he was cleaning up. Naturally it was rusted basically solid  ::) Anywho, it turns out that the Spirit plier jaws grab those knurled screws about perfectly, as do the jaws of his knock off Stanley multitool. So I was able to break down the kick and we got all the rust cleaned up. Other than a couple small pits here and there turns out it was mostly surface rust. The plier head was another story though, it was completely frozen. So we dropped it into a ziplock bag filled with Sea Foam Deep Creep (great frakin stuff BTW) and promptly forgot about it lol. Anywho, flash to 3 weeks later and my brother reports that the plier head has broken loose and seems to be working fine. So tonight I'm gonna head over to my Mom's (my ankle has healed enough for me to get around- woohoo!!) and reassemble it for him. Probably using my X-mas present that's waiting for me at home... Swisstool X!  :D Buuuut here's the problem...I no longer remember what order all the washers and implements go in   I separated the parts out by handle so that's no prob. but it's been too long for me to recall how the parts for each handle actually go.

The point to all this is that I could have sworn I saw a guide somewhere on taking apart and rebuilding a Kick, done by I think J-Sews maybe? But now I can't find it anywhere. Can anyone point me the right way or at least give me some pointers as to how the implements and washers are supposed to be stacked?\

Oh and PS: Turns out that Deep Creep molocules are actually small enough that stuff actually bleeds straight through the pours of a ziplock bag resulting in an oily coating on the outside of the bag. I thought that was cool as Hell.

Noone huh? Maybe I imagined it cuz I can't find it now lol. No matter though turns out the pler head is stool to rusty to really be of any use. So I pulled the plastic liners, crammed the knife, small flathead, and phillips into one handle together. Stuck the key ring ny itself on what used to be the pler pivot and made a SAK type tool out of the one handle half. Works pretty well  :tu:

Yeah, but like I said that plier head just wasn't getting loose enough to really be usable so I made him a custom tool out of the parts instead.

Think we wound up with 2 left over. Right now their in the other handle half that's probably gonna be re-purposed into a custom bottle/can opener

OK, I think you should have 4 washers in total, and they go as follows:

- 1 either side of the phillips driver
- 2 between the lanyard ring and long flat head driver.

Hopefully you can see the order of things in the pic below:

I used to come here a lot.

Yeah that order does look familiar lol. If I do get the plier head freed up and we decide to put the whole thing back together that'll be handy thanx. For now tho I think he's pretty happy with the custom tool I made him. It actually works really well.

Couldn't get a pic of it when I made it last night, and seeing as I don't live with him, may be a while before I get the opportunity. I'll try and keep it mind next time I see him though. In the mean time it's really similar to this as it's where I got the idea from: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,418.0.html
Obviously it's longer since it's a Fuse handle, and it only has 3 tools (he picked the ones he wanted) but it's the same idea. I wound up rebuilding it with the inserts back in it and no washers at all this time. It's a tight squeeze but works well, and with the inserts it is VERY comfy to use. The flatblade driver can be kinda hard to get out because the nail knick gets hidden below the level of the insert, but if you open the Phillips first you can get it out just fine.
