ToolLogic Card Tool
on: January 10, 2010, 12:59:23 AM
I admit it, I was intrigued.  The ToolLogic Survival card looked pretty good on their website.  I had to see what it was like in comparison to the veritable SwissCard.

So, I went about comparing it to a SwissCard (green with Lehman Bros logo), SwissCard Quattro (Red).  They are essentially all the same size.

Next up, the blade:

The ToolLogic blade is much more substantial.  MUCH.  And the shape of the handle is excellent for control.  Due to the single sided grind, it is more amenable to left-handed use, but it will function right handed as well. According to their website, the handle shape is amenable to tying to a stick and use as a spear. (Stick not included).

The SwissCard comes with a Scissors, nailfile, tweezers, toothpick and pen

The SwissCard Quattro has a flat 4 driver tool (really nice drivers, btw) instead of scissors in addition to nailfile, tweezers, toothpick and pen

The ToolLogic Survival card has a unique set of tools: REPLACEABLE Firesteel, compass, magnifying glass and whistle (besides tweezers and toothpick)

Here is the firesteel:

The Compass and Magnifying glass:

And the whistle:

All of these tools work very well.  The compass is surprisingly accurate.  The back of the blade is designed to be the striker for the firesteel.

Although the toothpick is unappetizingly blue, and a little on the sharp side (Gingivitis warning!  :ahhh), it works fine.

The tweezers are surprisingly good.  As good as the Vic tweezers, IMO.

The tools on the ToolLogic Survival Card have a pleasing *click* when they are replaced in their respective slots.

Overall, the ToolLogic Survival Card fills a very unique niche extremely well.  It is a high quality product, ready for use.

As a sidenote:

I found it interesting that the SwissCard and SwissCard Quattro had the tweezers and toothpicks reversed to each other.  Both are NIB and never used, so I have to assume they came from the factory that way.

I carry a Swisscard Lite in my wallet and I would replace it with the Tool Logic Survival card.  I love the compass and fire steel.

I also like that they left out the scissors, in a survival situation the main blade is sufficient.  The whistle is a neat touch but I think that space have been better utilized.

The knife blade makes for easy attachment to a spear http://www.toollogic.com/svc.htm

Nice find.

I've seen it before and always though "meh, cheap Swisscard knockoff trying too hard to be different" Surprised and happy to see that I was wrong. That mau actually be a handy thing to have as a bit of backup kit.

Yeah, nice comparison Mr. W!

I too had dismissed these things as Vic copies, but it actually looks like a better tool. Cool.
I used to come here a lot.

Gravediggin once again  :D

I got a Survival II card today, and have to say I am VERY pleased. It is a nice tool, the light seems to be bright enough to signal in emergency situations, the whistle is loud, the blade useful. I do not like the firesteel that much, for it creates very few sparks, but maybe it has to be used some times to remove coating. It came black, but after some strikes it had silver scratches, maybe it gets better in use...

Nice enough but I don't honestly think I've ever used it.

Bit of a random question regarding these card kits:given that the kives are fixed bladed, where do they stand legally?

I guess you will have to check local law. I think they are fixed blades in plastik sheaths, so the card is legally considered to be the sheath.

Here in Austria every knife but "hidden blades" like cane daggers are allowed. So if it is visible that it is a knife, it is legal to carry. Large blades, swingblades, otf, autos, balisong, ... No problem! The card is translucent, everyone can easily find the blade, so card tools are OK.

In neighbour Germany you have to have a legal reason to carry one handed and locking folding knives or fixed over 12cm blade lenght. So, again, no problem for the card tools.

IIRC there was a case a couple of years ago where a retired, high ranking, policeman was given a warning for carrying a Swisscard without good reason, so I'd seriously think twice about it myself. ::)
