I'm in for a new tool, please help me to find the right one!

Hello,
I've had a Gerber tool for over 15 years now.

It's very strong, bus it has some disadvantages.
In a tool, the pliers are the most important to me.

The Geber pinches the skin of my hand, every time I use it in a very painful way. :-[

Someone advised me the Swisstool X.
Now,here is my first question:
Can the pliers of this tool be used without brusing the inside of my hand?
Is it ergonomic?

Thank you!

Welcome to MTO.

I have never had any pinching with a Swisstool, it is very comfortable to use.  If comfort is a big concern of yours then may I suggest looking into the Swisstool Spirit which has more ergonomic handles.

Back on topic....

Gerber's are notorious for hand pinching.  It is probably fair to state that most tools produced nowadays from any of the top guys will not suffer from this anymore.

I have large mitts , nary a pinch . The Spirit has most of the attributes of the Swisstool , and curved handles - just like real pliers .

For the record , I never got pinched when I rocked a Leatherman Wave or Charge either .

Personally, I find the Swisstool a bit big from an ergonomics point of view (it's a big tool), so as others have suggested you might find it's little brother the Spirit more comfy, at the cost of not being as big and strong.

I can't see any problems with pinching with either of those tools though - you'd be fine.
I used to come here a lot.

Older Gerber tools had a really bad habit of crimping the palm of your hand when you slip off of something while using the pliers.  It's the disadvantage of having a slide out plier head.  The newer Gerber pliers certainly aren't as bad as the older ones, and Gerber is the only manufacturer to my knowledge that ever had a sliding plier head design.  So you shouldn't have that problem on any other multitool.

You especially won't see this on butterfly opening tools like the Leatherman Charge and Victorinox Swisstool.

Assess your needs, read up on some review and make your choice.

The Swisstool is a great tool, and as you have carried a Gerber for 15  years you are probably have no issue with having to use two hands to open blades.

You should also consider a Leatherman Wave or Charge, if you are in a country that allows you to carry a one hand opening blade.  Also, the SOG Powerlock may be worth your consideration.

I've heard a few grumbles about pinching with Waves and Charges actually. I think it's where the OHO blades come together between the handles when you've got the pliers open. I can kind of see it, but can't even force it to happen myself.

Maybe it's a bigger issue of you've got massive hands? Dunno.

I have tiny hands and my father in law has larger hands, we both get pinched with our waves/charges.

How do you do it then? I assume it's between the file & SE blade or saw & PE blade, is that right? I always tend to use the pliers with the ends of the handles in my palms as I get more leverage that way - that leaves my well away from the "pinch zone" if I'm understanding right :)

I choke up because I tend to do more delicate work with the pliers.  I might post an in hand pic later to demonstrate.

Actually now that you mention it, it looks to me that if you have smaller hands you would use the pliers higher up instead of out at the ends and I can see how it would crimp the palm of your hand.  Even when I try to do it it doesn't happen often.  I've never had that happen in normal use though.

Seems like there would be less of a tendency for this to happen on an Old style Wave.  I don't have mine anymore to check, anyone with an old Wave care to check this?  I'm curious.

In five years of use, I never got bit by my original wave.  My Surge has gotten me pretty good though.  That spot between the blade exchanger and the knife blade is a killer.

Oh, and to the OP, although I don't have one myself, I don't think there's a more ergonomic tool on the market than the Swiss Tool Spirit.  I really want to get one and give those curved handles a try.
