So, Liam still hasn't really said a word than the basic babbling of mama or dada.  We think we hear other words like...hug...egg...or up, but he doesn't say them on a near consistent basis.  More like say them once and then never again.  We have already agreed to take him a speech speSmurfpillst at 15 months (he's just shy of 13 months), but we are wondering if we are worrying over nothing.

:twak:  If his next word isn't Victorinox or Leatherman or Swiss Army Knife or multitool or Sebenza, something's wrong. XD

I wouldn't worry to much,my second grandson just turned two, still not talking, but is using sign langage,Dr. said he is OK,my second son didn't start talking tell he was almost four years old,but when he did start,we couldn't get him to shut up,that was 39 years ago.

Just enjoy them why you can, they only stay young once.

I wouldn't worry about it yet Zack, my wee one didn't say much of anything until after 15 months.  She learnt a little baby sign language to get by with until she started speaking.  I'm told my brother didn't speak until he was fully 3 years old.

My brother's boys are 3 and 5.  The 3 year old hasn't spoken a word yet and the 5 year old doesn't stop.  My brother and his wife have had the younger one to various speSmurfpillsts, but there's nothing wrong with him, other than he just doesn't speak because he doesn't feel the need.  I'm not really one to talk as I have no kids (and never much claimed to be good with them either) but it seems to me that at that age, their needs are pretty well taken care of, and they can communicate as well as they need to by pointing, screaming or just doing things themselves.  I'm sure that as their need to communicate increases, so will their skills in doing it.  I have no doubt that my nephew will start in his own time- he's smart enough, and the vocal chords work well (I know that one first hand!) but he just prefers to do his own thing, much like his uncle does.  For now he just shows up at meal times and is fed, follows his brother around and takes what he wants when he wants it, letting his older brother do all the work.

For Liam, well I'd certainly have him checked out to make sure there aren't any problems, but I think if everything checks out, I would just let him be Liam and let him figure things out for himself.  But then, remember, it's easy for me to armchair QB since I'm not nor are ever likely to be in that situation!

This reminds me of a story about one of the great composers (I forget who now) who didn't speak for the first five years or so.  One breakfast he pipes up for the first ever time "mother this toast is cold", the parents are greatly relieved and ask the obvious question "son, why haven't you spoken before"?  To which he replies "up until now everything has been most satisfactory".

I wouldn't worry too much Zack even though it's hard not too.

My son was a latecomer to his first distinctive words and even then it wasn't the clearest. We found that having him spend more time with other children like playgroups really helped.

Similiar to Ben though my daughter started quite young and hasn't stopped since  :D

As parents we spend the first few years encouraging them to walk and talk and the rest of their life we tell them to 'Sit down and be quiet!'

Wise words to remember...  :salute:
I catch myself comparing my nearly three year old daughter Thea with my oldest girl Sarah
when she was the same age.. Sarah spoke fantastic at that age, and Thea is just starting..
It's funny how different they are, eventhough they have the same parents..  :D

Other way around in our house.  My youngest started talking much earlier than the eldest.  Now neither of them will be quiet for thirty seconds :D

There are distinct advantages to less vocal babes...
There I was changing the little one's nappy when he was about twelve months and he comes out with, "I have done a poo daddy, take my nappy off", I comply "now you wipe the poo off" I comply "now you eat it!"  :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh

From the mouths of babes eh?!

Apparently I was constructing sentences by 9 months, but my first word was "no" so I suspect they could have done with some peace and quiet. However, I turned out to be severely dyslexic so early linguistic development probably isn't always a good thing
