We have a "Traditional Aluminum Macchinetta" which is a stovetop expresso coffee maker, cheap and reliable.(Image removed from quote.) (ours is gunmetal grey tho!)We found a slight variant that has an electric bottom that heats the water, then automatically shuts off after 20min or when you lift the pot off the base. The original top half part was all plastic, which unfortunately broke when I dropped it one day while cleaning it... luckily the generic aluminum top fits perfectly, so we still can use it... it's now about 4 years old, and the wire contacts in the lower element corroded at one point, which I have since fixed.(Image removed from quote.) those do look to be getting cooler... they even have stuff like tea and hot chocolate now...
although ive given it up i really fancy a cup now, but at 20.15pm i know ill never sleep
