Recommendation for home use
on: March 24, 2010, 11:10:53 AM
Hi everybody,

I'd like to retire my toolbox and want to put it in the basement.
What I'm looking for is a MT for home use, that said: weight doesn't matter as it'll mostly "live" in a kitchen drawer.
What I think I need
- a MT that's at least 10cm [3,9 in] (better 11cm [4,3 in]) long (folded), because I have big hands
- something that's not entirely overpriced (up to 150$ / 150€ is OK)

What I think I don't need
- scissors and a can / bottle opener (although they're always present, aren't they)

It need not be the latest model or coolest brand, it can IMHO even be used - as long as it does the job...

How about a regular Swisstool http://www.multitool.org/victorinox/large-tools/victorinox-swisstool.html

There a big solid lump, but like you say that's not a problem for you :), and at least the can/bottle openers double up as screwdrivers :)

Welcome to the forum. :tu:

A Leatherman Super Tool 300 would also fit the bill.
A little Leatherman information.

Welcome Marty  :cheers:

I would suggest looking at:

Victorinox Swisstool;
Leatherman Surge;
Leatherman Supertool 300 (my personal favourite for DIY around the house);
SOG Powerlock

All 4 are big multitools that won't let you down, but of course each has it's strengths and weaknesses depending on what you'll likely use it for. The Supertool 300 has the best screwdrivers, the SOG has the best wire cutters, the Surge has a T-shank adapter (useful if you envisage using different saw blades and such), the Swisstool has the nice feeling of solidity that some people love.

In truth, any of them will do you, but I'd recommend the Supertool 300 as I think it's best suited to around the house stuff. And of course it is the newest of the above on the market, with the most up to date design. I might be mistaken, but it could be the cheapest as well, which is a bonus.
I used to come here a lot.

Though I'm a fanof the LM Wave/Surge. On this subject, a simple LM Kick would be perfect :think:

 And some condemned for a fault alone." -William Shakespeare, King Lear (1608), Act IV, scene 6, line 169

I'd probably go for a LM Core or Super Tool 300.  The Core has recently be replaced by the ST300 but should still be easy to get hold off and probably at good prices.

A Swisstool would also be a very good choice IMO.

Welcome to the forum. :cheers:

I vote for the Super Tool 300 and the Powerlock. Don't own a ST300 myself but impressions of it was that it's very capable, and BIG. The replaceable wire cutters mean you don't have to worry about ruining it.

The SOG Powerlock.. well to me it's reasonably priced and the compounded leverage action means the pliers and the wire cutters are so good... that the Singapore Armed Forces issues one to every new recruit. :D

I vote SOG Powerlock.  It's big, it grips well, it has no scissors.

Pretty well any of the above should do it for you . Leatherman Wave , Vic Swisstool/Spirit , Leatherman Supertool 300 /Core would fill your bill . I would also throw in a Leatherman Universial Tool Adaptor ( will give you the option to use 1/4 hex bits .

Check out Bills thread too , lots of good advice .
