Bicycle D-Locks?
on: February 27, 2010, 12:23:14 PM
I'm after a quality D-lock for my bicycles, and was initially going to get a New York Lock, but after seeing there lock's being picked with a biro, I'm having to reassess my choices :-\

I have a rough criteria, ie I'm not concerned too much about weight, just so long as it's VERY secure. And ideally I'd like to get it from a manufacturer that offer's to get you a new bike should there lock fail :)

Thanks in advance guy's n gal's :tu:

i have a bulldog on gaurd D lock, i just posted it in the bike porn thread, it was about £45 with a wire loop aswell for your front wheel and my bike hasn't been stolen yet but it was worth less then the last one. the locks insured for bikes up to some thing like $1000 if you email the company they send you a form for registering for it over here too

bad thing is if you secure the frame and a wheel they steal the seatpost and headset.

A caveat about these makers who say you can claim your losses if their lock is broken off:
Most of them say something in the small print about having to prove their lock was on when you left it, so you would need to have a photo of it every time you parked up... not impossible, but not very practical either.

As a rule of thumb, they say you should spend at least 10% of the value of your bike on the lock(s).  D-locks are supposed to be better than cables overall, but using both doesn't hurt either :)

I have a D lock for my bike when I ride to work and always take the seat post with me.  I'm not so much concerned with someone stealing my bike as I am having my tires slashed.  No lie, a couple of years ago I came outside after work and found my back tire slashed.  Not just flat, slashed.  You would not believe the fit I threw over that.  The poor security guard actually looked a little bit concerned as he took down the report.  After that, untiil they got a proper place for me to lock up my bike, I brought it into the building with me and kept it in our lockerroom.  It's amazing that at a hospital, they would not provide a safe, secure area for us to put our bikes but they encourage us not to drive to work but ride a bike or walk.  Simply amazing.  :)

Doesn't it?  They still don't really have a proper place for my bike but they did get a bike rack.  Now this is the funny part, they put the bike rack in a dark corner where the security cameras cant see and it's by the entrance that the employees are not allowed to use.  Nice huh?  However, they did put a handy little bench right next to the employee entrance where it is well lit (I work night shift so it's dark when I leave in the mornings) and the security cameras constantly sweep that area.  They don't like me locking the bike to that bench, but i told them if they weren't going to put in a bike rack down there then they'd have to get over it.  It's stupid.  I don't get why it's such a big deal to move the bike rack to the employee entrance.  It's not like our patients ride their bicycles to the hospital if they need treatment.  And I'm not the only one who rides either...several doctors and other employees ride as well.  It's just stupid.

i think it depends on where you live ryan, ive been a cyclist for over 30 years and ive had 4 bikes stolen, 1 when i was 13 it was a PK ripper and this was 1983 and it was stolen from my shed,my kona explosive i got back in 89 stolen outside a shop , it was locked with a cable, and then 2 more over the last 7 years, 1 from my back garden and another from a locked up alley way, i mainly use a D-lock but since i use the sheds here or take it into work i mainly use the cable now , but i dont generally leave any of my bikes anywhere for very long,
