My multitool use over the last couple of years .
on: February 26, 2011, 08:18:35 PM
The Swisstool is firmly back in rotation now  :D  Some of our longer serving inmates members will know I EDCed a Vic Swisstool for years . It is and always has been my favourite multitool . I got a bit bored and decided to do some long term test on other tools and that must have been two years or so ago . Its been quite a trip with some surprises along the way . Heres my quick run down of what stood out and what didn't .

The LM Wave and Vic Spirit have become firm favourites with me . Both performed really well and I have no serious concerns with them .
SOG I just couldn't get on with , I tried the Pocket Power Plier , Powerlock , Power Assist and Paratool . While I like the pliers and compound leverage I couldn't get along the the interior tools , in particular the scissors and can opener but the blades wern't great either .
Gerber and I'll be honest I only tried the MP600 and 400 tools which I've always liked and are good solid performers . I will just say it was a MP600 awl that is only one of two tools I've ever broken ( the other being a LM SideClip blade ) .
The LM PST and SideClip will always stay in my EDC rotation due to their lightweight and non locking blades .

The LM Skeletool needs a special mention , either love it or hate it you have to admit it a fantastic design . I did have ideas about using it as part of my rescue equipment but I think I'd rather have a bigger beefier tool with a bigger choice of tools  ;) Still I gave it a shot though .
The Kick , Fuse and Blast left me feeling a little cold and while they are very good tools I didn't really like them but thats just me . Everything on them works ok . Having said that though I am still considering getting a knifeless fuse .

So what have I learned from all this   Well the Swisstool isn't the be all and end all of Multitools , there are other tools out there . I forgot just how heavy it was  :D and I had to make sure I had a strong fingernail to get the tools out . I also forgot just how nice the blades are and how easily they are to sharpen and the shear awsome cutting power of Vic serrations .And just the whole built like a tank thing  ;)

I will still be using some of my other tools , the Wave and Spirit especially but the Swisstool inspires a confidence in its use that I have never felt in any other multitool .

Thanks for reading .

Thanks for the insight Dunc!  :tu: My multitool journey was:
Gerber Suspension ---> Vic Tourist ---> Swisstool CS Plus ---> Swissgrip ---> Deluxe Tinker ---> Everything else

I got spoiled early (or learned quickly ) which is why I can sometimes be scathing of other MT's, and keep expecting (naively) the fit, finish, and overall robustness of the Swissy ... and not finding it. Daily carries for me are deluxe tinker and swisstool and now everything else just seems ... well, lets just say I can see why you've gone back to it. In fairness my overall experience IS limited when it comes to MT's but certainly for now I think I've got a winning combo - DT in the pocket, CS plus in the bag and Swissgrip at the boat. We all heve different needs though, so for others it might not work.

I've never been drawn to the SOG offerings --- but that might just be the flappy bits, and I keep hearing good stuff about the 400 & 600 Gerbers, but struggle to get over my previous disappointments to throw real money their way ... same with Leatherman tools.

You're right - it is heavy though. If I didn't carry a bag everywhere, I doubt it would ever accompany me anywhere. Good to hear the Swissy is gonna see more action again

Mine is a lot shorter... Spirit w/Wrench -> Spirit with Ratchet -> Black Oxide Spirit-S.

I've held a SwissTool, and a SOG in my hands for maybe 15mins.  Anyone want a good deal?

I have a couple baby sized ones for fun.  I really want to try a TTi, and I'm going to buy a Black-Oxide SwissTool one day, but so far, besides SAKs only the Spirit models really float my boat.  It's a good thing too no money for plier tools.  If someone offers me a gold one though I might cave.

I say, stay strong, stay true.

Hmmm... Let's see...
PST knock-off (yeah I know... sorry... :-[ it was only '92-3 and I was but a young lad) -> MP400 -> old Wave -> MP700 -> SpyderRench -> MP700 -> SwissTool X -> MP700 -> Charge Ti -> Charge TTi -> Spirit -> Spirit S -> Spirit X

Hope I didn't let anyone out as they're notorious for biting me when feeling neglected. :-\ :D (I've owned much more than that, as most of us I guess... :D, but these are the tools I really carried and used for some time).

I take it you like the MP700 ... ?  :)
Gerber 3 times but swisstool once ...?
So what was wrong with the swisstool for you? And what's so good about the Gerber?

I may be often scathing but my ears are always open - and having never experienced the MP700 I need to hear more  :D

Actually it was the same MP700... not 3 different ones. :D At the time the MP700 had all locking, outside accessible implements, one-hand opening blade, scissors, carbide wire cutter inserts, and (having aluminium handles) was the lightest of the pack (much lighter than the Spydie and ST at least). Taking into account the old Wave was the state-of-the-art for LM then, what's not to like? :)

I can see why you pick the swisstool. I have carried a lot of tools. The swiss tool is a favorite. Here is my list in order.
Charge/wave
Surge
Core/super 300
Swiss tool
Schrade professional adjustable jaw

Thanks for the thoughts mate. :tu:

My multitool story's a bit convoluted, I'm sorry to say.  Started with an original Supertool that served me very well for about 6 years, also got my first SAK (a Waiter) in that time.  I also got a PST second hand that I just never took too.  Stopped working for a few years and found myself not needing pliers all the much and so focused on SAKs for a a while, then I came here. ::)  Got myself a Pulse, Blast, Fuse, Kick, Squirts P4 and PS4, Micra's, PST II, Spirit X and, more recently, a couple of Gerbers, a Freestyle, Juice Sc2 and a Skeletool.

Gone are the Blast, it became a pile of parts to mod the Fuse and Kick, and the Freestyle got traded for a Skeletool.

Of that little list the most commonly carried are the Kick, Pulse and Spirit X, but the MP400 and the Juice are getting a lot of carry time as well.  I think it's fair to say I like playing around with my EDC. :D

If I had to pick one tool of the one's I have it'd be the Spirit X, no doubt about it. :tu:

Gerber Multiplier>Gerber Pro Scout>LM Supertool 200>Gerber Diesel>LM Surge>LM ST300 or Vic Spirit or Swisschamp depending on the day and my mood.

Diesel was the only low point. Total junk. But all the rest I'd gladly carry today.

I agree Zepla. Its the only thing that puts me off the SwissTool. I absolutely adore my SAK and it is never out of my site but I don't use it for heavy jobs and i'm kinda sceptical about the SwissTool being as good as a Charge...

Thats very true Zepla but its also the tool loadout with me. None of them are really what i'm looking for. I'm sure the quality etc is fantastic because its still Victorinox we're talking about here.

if you already have all of those multitool i think you should get a MUT
i first thought of a supertool300 because of its pliers but if you work in rescue you are going to need a onehand blade and the mut has one, a hammer that can come handy a big ass pliers and a big knife
and it looks COOOOOOL :( so think about it if you like big multitools why not to try the biggest xD

(by the way people i think i saw a multitool with a hammer and an axe   i hope i saw incorrectly )
