my first two
on: March 28, 2010, 09:03:14 AM
i got a couple of gerbers today so heres some pics:

first the OCTANE:

LOVE IT! i can actually see myself carrying only this and being happy about it :)

tool selection? everything you may need for those little every day task :)

the size and the clip makes it perfect for pocket carry, you can hardy feel is there

and the clamshell opener? works perfect!!!

now to the MP600

about the MP600, it rattles....a lot :D but it doesnt bother me, what i do found interesting is that some of the tools of the OCTANE are better(?) IMHO

i know the MP600 is about heavy duty work but besides that i would take the OCTANE everyday :tu:

what do you guys think?

Yes, the Octane is a gem of an MT. Gerber just did everything right with it.

As for the MP 600, I do believe it came out in 98/99, and they didn't change the tool much since. So there is no surprise that the new Octane improves on it. It is a testament to the 600 that for such an old design, it is still relevant and so popular.

Yes, they rattle until you clamp down on something. The fake MP600 DET rattles even more.  :o

Nice pair you have there. I suggest an MP 400 next.

Nice pair of Gerbers to start off with there Angel :salute: The MP600 may rattle a bit, but that's part of the design and it's nothing to fret about. A good strong proven tool by any account :tu:

A question for Octane owners: Has anyone actually used the phillips screwdriver yet on a "difficult" screw? :-\

Notice how two of the flutes are at an angle that look correct, and two of the flutes are at a much shallower angle? It makes me think that even though this is a full square phillips, it will perform more like a flat phillips driver :(

Good point there Bob, ill prove that once i use it for something, ill start carrying it today

As for the MP600, the rattle doesnt matter to me eather, my sog rattles and the SURGE i used to have rattled too and i dont think they are less capable because of that :)

Chako, your right is an older model and like you said it still relevant, i like it actually, i was just pointing out how GREAT i think the OCTANE is :D

I just wish they'd get rid of that clam pack opener for something useful, then I'd consider one to replace the 400 as EDC.

I happen to like the clampack opener, assuming it works. I would use such a device often.
