my 1st golden made spydie
on: March 30, 2010, 10:01:41 PM
my ukpk rescue turned up today. :mail:

ive been after a usa made spyderco for ages now, after owning knives in the spyderco and byrd range from taiwan and china that are as close to perfect as i could want for a user, i needed to see if the quality lived up to the spyderco golden hype. im not gunna lie, i cannot find a fault with this knife.

1st impressions.

ive never seen a ukpk in the flesh before, when i opened the box i was shocked(a good shocked) with 3 things:
1. how bright the g10 orange really is
2. how grippy the g10 is (its a more course texture than on the byrd wings slippit)
3. the blade thickness, theres a huge solid lump of steel between the g10.

the ergonomics of this knife are fantastic it fits in my small chubby hands really well.

fit and finish:
wow ,
i always look over my knives when i get them to make sure there are no real issues with them, they are all users .so as long as they will be safe to use and there are no broken parts they will pass my little test, but i just cannot find a fault with the f+f of this knife.

the g10 is smooth on the edges all over.
the opening and closing of the knife is smooth with zero blade play, the blade sits dead center of the knife.
the spyde hole has no sharp edges, the metal back spacer fits flush with no gaps next to the handle scales, the jimping is grippy but not to rough.

also most importantly of all the edge is razor sharp and all of the serrations are perfectly formed and all ground perfect.
this knife is almost to good to be a user, it feels like i have brought a custom knife from mr glesser himself, and not a production one.

i suppose the proof will be when i take it to work. to see if it performs as good as it looks.(it did cut a laptop bag strap and some cardboard like a laser when i gave it a quick test).

if anybody was thinking about getting a rescue blade i would recomend the spyderco (just on looks alone)

knife dimensions

length (closed): 112mm
length (open) :  176mm
blade length: 73mm
edge: 67mm
blade thickness: 4mm
handle width : 25mm
handle width (across closed blade): 37mm
thickness of knife :10mm

would i recommend this knife without doubt.

PS for future reference does anyboby have any tips for cleaning dirt and oil marks from g10?

many thanks
