LD10's Q5 and R4, any noticeable differences?
on: April 02, 2010, 04:47:36 AM
I got a Fenix LD10 (Q5), and a diffuser. Awesome light! It's now my EDC.
I learned that there's a new emitter for Fenix's LD10, the R4. Are there noticeable difference
between the two, in terms of brightness?

I have the LD10 Q5 also, beam is a little ringy in mine. I believe R4 is only 7 Lumens brighter, and probably more floodier, not sure its worth upgrading, unless you want to get rid of the rings.

:tu:

R4 LEDs do tend to be floody.  I doubt the difference is worth getting a second one to be honest.  I've got one of the older LD10s - its a great little light :tu:

R4 LEDs do tend to be floody.

"R4" is the flux bin of the emitter, not the type of emitter.  The "R4" designation doesn't make a difference with flood.  The type of emitter is what makes a light more or less floody.  For instance, an XP-G is floodier than an XP-E due to the size of the die in each emitter.

An R4 XP-E would be less floody than an R4 XP-G, just as a Q5 XP-E would be less floody than a Q5 XP-G.  The flux bin (Q3, Q5, R2, R4, etc.) just determines the efficiency at the same drive level.

Gads! My Gerber Infinity is floody enough for me anyway. Used it last night to check on my cat when I heard her meeowing. She had a dead mouse..ekk.
