From Snow white to Deep Purple
on: April 20, 2010, 12:39:07 AM
It was a special one Delica and one Endura for a pretty decent price.  There was a catch
though... white scales.  I couldn't take it any longer so I bought a box of dye for less than
3 bucks and voila.  I got "purple" from the "Navy Blue" dye.  :-\  Oh well, it actually took
very well and looks loads better than it did in white.

thank you fellas.  I was amazed at how smooth it all came out.  Not blotchy and uneven it's pretty
much perfect absorption if anyone else is thinking of doing the same to frn.

Should work Jim.  I used RIT dye, can be bought in any supermarket I would think.  I just emptied the
whole package in as hot of water that could be drawn from my tap and gave it a good stir to dissolve
the crystals and dipped the knife in it gave it a few swirls and left it there for 10 minutes.
I then took it out and rinsed it very well under the tap and then hit it with my hair dryer then left it
out in the sun for awhile.  That's it.
I have a Pacific Salt and I think I'm going to hit it with some scarlet red and see how nice and orange
it might turn out.

I really wouldn't want to guarantee a colour with this stuff.  I started out with white frn and the color
of dye was navy blue on the package and I ended up with that purple that is very similar to Spyderco's
purple in their FFG knives just out.
I don't think it was the dye, I think it was what the dye did when it was absorbed into the frn.

Not sure if it's the same but can't see it being any different in results.

Would leaving it longer yield different results?

time might make it darker.  pull it out after a few minutes and see what it looks like then
after 5 and then 10.  Mine was in the dye for 10.  It's really quite amazing how dye
absorbs so well into frn.  Like I mentioned before you'd be hard pressed to tell that it was
a home job.  I think most would be happy with the results if they want a change.

do you think that would make green? I know when mixing paint it does, but the handle being yellow already would the blue over it still make green?

I'm doing the pacific salt right now and it doesn't look like it's going to turn out anywhere near
as nice as the white one did.  I am blasting the yellow handle with royal blue and it's looking
crappy so far,  a very dull lime colour.  Will be leaving it in for 30 minutes to see how it looks.

Ok that was a mistake adding blue dye to the yellow frn.  It turned out a nasty dirty gold and
looks like it's old, dirty, and faded, not what I was envisioning.  :-\  Anyhow I have dunked it
in scarlet red to see how that turns out.  If this doesn't work I might have to buy black huh?

From what I've been hearing the longer you leave it in the darker it gets to a point.
