Lube A Mechanical Clicky Switch ?
on: April 19, 2010, 02:01:15 AM
I read on another forum that the clicky switch should be lubed for long life. Anyone here done this to their switch? Just for grins I lubed a 3 buck throwaway & it was ok after the lube job. I used Inox. Anyone here done this?

You'd have to be real careful with what you use.  Anything gungy could attract dirt and actually reduce life, and anything non-conductive could prevent the contacts being made.

Personally, I would not lube and aim to keep the switch as clean and reliable as possible.

I prefer to not lube them so that dirt attraction is minimized.  Sometimes I have actually used a bit of baby powder with good results.

What brand switch is it?

Its a reverse clicky. No name brand junker light. Got it a gas station for 3 bucks so its no big deal if it bites the dust. I only put one drop of inox in it.

This was just an experiment so to speak. I am going to take everyones advice & not try it again. I would really go bonkers if my Romisen bit the dust by doing this. An under 5 buck light is no big wuff to me if it shoots the moon.

Most switches are tested before release without lubes, sometimes up to 100.000 times  ;)

Thanks for the info John! I only guess that is true for name brand light's & not el cheapo lights bought at a gas station or dollar store. Petrol for my Brit freinds!

Yes you are correct but I think even el cheapo switches are tested but you may have to adjust the test figure to say..... hmm!   around 10 times  :o
