Multitool Recomendation Please
on: April 27, 2010, 01:16:04 AM
Not for me but for my sister :D

I was over at her house at the weekend only to discover that she has a PST II  :tu: It was really nice, I particularly like the scissors  :salute: So I told her a bit about it and showed her its birth month [12/99] and talked about the USA plier head.

Anyway, I thought it might be nice to keep a look out for something else for her. She is very outdoorsy and travels a lot. She works at an outdoor centre where older school kids would come and go camping, live off the land etc. She would also go 'proper' mountain camping and climbing.

She really likes what the PST II has to offer and who could blame her. She also like the scissors but did say the blade covers most things. She does have a few knives that she takes with her. I think she would really like / benefit from a Wave type one hand opening blade. With my Leatherman bias I think it should be a Leatherman but all opinions are welcomed  :tu:

My ideas include
  • Wave, obviously
  • Skeletool, great blade / pliers combo, carabiner & lightweight
  • Blast Camo, just 'cos it's camo
  • Swisstool RS, Rescue & Survival :salute:

Many thanks in advance  :salute:

I gave my brother two MTs recently an orange Juice S2 and a Spirit, he prefers to carry the Juice more due to its smaller size while maintaining the tool layout most suited for his needs. Cs4 or Xe6 can fit the bill both having a blade and a saw for outdoors and keeping the scissors + they are UK edc legal :tu:

That is so cool that your sister has a MT & that it is a PSTII  8) 8) 8).

I reckon your sis definitely needs a MT with a saw. Wave would be good or even a Spirit if being compact is a issue

A SAK like a Farmer might be good , along with a Rambler for the keyring .

I'm gonna stray from the pliers based here as well, and recommend a Vic OHT or Rescue tool.  The Rescue tool has not made it in to my collection yet(it will), but it has some tools that can be really helpful in an emergency.  If weight is an issue she should definitely pick up an OHT.  Big strong serrated blade that can be opened really quickly, and a saw and can opener.  Both are great tools.

I'll go for the Wave. Versatility in a good package.

+1 :)

Unless she's got big hands, a Wave might be to wide for her

Of course you recommend the farmer!  I still need to get one...

My wife can attest that the Wave handles are too rough and too wide for small feminine hands.  She hated my Wave(s).  She loves my Charge, but that one is too heavy for a woman to carry around.  Your sis is probably sitting pretty with that PSTII or one of my previous suggestions.

Thanks for all the replies  :salute:

Quite like the thought of the Juice idea; I did show her my KF4 which she liked. It doesn't have scissors though but its blade more than makes up for that  :tu:

Good to see the Wave getting some love  :multi:

lots of love from me mate, and TBH pretty much all she would need, possibly the weight and size could be its only problem, but never been a issue for me,  :tu:

Much as I like my Leatherman's for the great outdoors I take a SAK.  A Vic Forrester/Trekker, Camper/Hiker or Huntsman/Fieldmaster depending if you're wanting a corkscrew/Phillips.  This way you're not trying to replace her MT but perhaps compliment it.

+1 to the SAK idea.  A Forester or a OH Trekker, if OH is the way you are wanting to go, would both compliment the PST II quite well.
I'm back!!

Personally, I dug my Surge for camping (I don't mind weight and size) but obviously that wouldn't work for most women. Most of the people that I camp/climb/ski with have one of 2 Leatherman's, a Wave (most popular) or the Blast/Fuse. The Blast/Fuse are great tools, don't get my wrong, but why open the tools to get to your saw, when you can get it mostly one handed? So may vote would be Wave.

Also, I know a fairly dainty handed farm girl that has had a Wave for several years (old model) and she loves it, helps her fencing, tracker maintenance, running rivers in the Yukon. So that's a female endorsement too!
