How can I make simple lanterns for outdoor use without candles?

I have some events coming up in a forest/wooded area that requires some paths to be lit. The first thing I thought of was paper bag lanterns, which would indeed create the atmosphere I need, but I am afraid of the whole candle/paper/forest aspect. Is there any kind of cheap, simple, DIY lantern I could make? It needs to have an old-timely feel. No flashlights or anything. Please help!

Again, don't spam on this forum. - Benner

Not quite sure what you want, lanterns, without fire, but without flashlights?

easiest thing I can think of is to hide the LED flashlights inside paper lanterns, perhaps sanding the lens so that it diffuses more?  small cheap LED lanterns would be another option if hidden well

  • Shop smart, shop S-Mart.
They do make LED votive candles, or LED tea lights/candles. Though they might prove a little expensive for what you want to do.

A few examples"

Common sense ..... so rare, it's virtually a super power.

There are a lot of LED lanterns imitate the look of oil lanterns. But really people have been using propane lantern for a long time and I've never heard any forest fire started with it.

While i was in OA in Boy Scouts we would take rolls of toilet paper..immerse them in melted paffafin then let them cool. Place one roll in an old metal Folgers coffee can and you have a long burning oldish looking mild flame for random uses. You can also use a clothes hanger bent to use as a carry for it.

I know you asked for lanterns without candles,
But have you thought of a tea light in a jam jar with a bit of wire around the top to carry or hang it by?
The hardest thing to do is light them, you will find yourself dropping lit tealights in to the jars  ::)
Everything’s adjustable

Don't know if this reply is too late, I've only just seen this thread.

Have you considered using solar powered fairy lights? You can get strings of them relatively cheaply. If you wound them through the undergrowth (off the ground) they wouldn't get stood on and broken. They last approximately 6 - 8 hours. If you need longer than this time, get duplicates and only turn the second set on once the first have failed.

We've used them successfully in similar situations.

Hope that helps.
