I used a piece of wood and put one of the handle spacers and used it as a drill guide to hold the pins and then assembled the layers one at a time.  Use a pair of slip-joint pliers with the tip taped to prevent scratches to put tension on the spring.  It was shown either on this forum or the knifeforums.  I believe scibeer posted the thread.  It worked good for me but you can get even more creative and make one out of metal.  Hope this helps

I have a very similar setup.  I have a bunch of wooden blocks marked out for the different frame sizes that I fit into a vice.

I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

This is the link to the thread with my cheapie jig.   It has put out many hundreds of knives and still works.

Looking good :tu:

My wooden blocks work well for me but I will one day get around to making something more robust. So far I have not found any suitable steel  :-\

That's where I'm at.

I need to devote some time to getting things setup right so I can make modding (especially the scales) a bit more routine. A decent jig would be a real help for me.
I used to come here a lot.

Its surprisingly difficult to casually acquire flat steel more than a couple of mm thick.  Weight makes buying it via post unrealistic.

I see your thinking :tu:

However, there are some quite large forces at work when you pull the backspings to fit in the tools.  My wooden blocks are only good for ten at most mods before there is too much play in the holes.  Aluminium would last longer but would still deform and I have a large supply of wooden blocks and not much aluminium.

If I'm going to the trouble to make a posh jig then I want to do it once :)

Also note the dimples on Taninaree's example.  I'm assuming he's going to be using them when peening, its a good idea.

What kind of metal would you think about using, then?  There should be metalworking shops (heck, or the equivalent of a Lowe's or Home Depot) that would be able to supply you with a harder steel.

The last of the general ironmongers closed up shop round here nearly two decades back :(   Our chain DIY stores, Homebase, Focus just don't stock that kind of thing.  It really is just a matter of keeping my eyes open for suitable scrap.

Have you looked around at any closing or about-to-be-demolished warehouses or perhaps even vehicle maintenance shops?  Baring not finding anything suitable at either of those, what about flea markets/boot sales?  I don't understand why home repair centers wouldn't carry any thicker pieces of non-aluminium metals. o.O

I haven't taken a wander around the industrial estate looking for scrap I must admit.  Though we have so many blokes in scrap wagons rolling around the place the chances of me seeing anything before its nabbed are minimal :)

I've no idea why the DIY shops don't carry metal, they carry plenty of wood  :-\
