I like Byrds better than Spydercos - Am I Crazy?
on: May 21, 2010, 11:39:43 PM
Alright, wandered down to the local sharp 'n shiny place to pick up the wife a new keychain knife (she's wanted something with a more robust blade than her Classic) and I ended up getting a Byrd Finch.
I also ended up keeping said Byrd Finch and giving her my Ladybug.

Now, I have a not small collection of cutting implements, but I have noticed that in the three cases where I have analogous knives from Spyderco and Byrd (Finch/Ladybug, Cara Cara/Endura, Meadowlark/Delica),  I've found myself preferring the Byrd knives for EDC usage.  In the case of the Cara Cara vs. the Endura, I prefer the Cara Cara by a significant margin.

I mean, is there something wrong with me or what?

Byrds are well crafted and a great value , but are not a patch on some of the higher end Spidies .

Byrd knives are nice... the comet hole is a bit weird at first but I'm used to the look and feel of it now.  The only Byrd knife I own is the G10 Raven and it's a sturdy EDC/beater knife.
This is called a Swiss Army Knife. Do you know what Switzerland is? Switzerland is a place where they don't like to fight, so they get people to do their fighting for them while they ski and eat chocolate. - Larry David

I like my Byrds plenty, but they don't come close to my UKPK or other Spydies I have owned in the past :)
I used to come here a lot.

That's comet hole is definitely one thing I like better.  If you're wearing gloves or need to get at your knife quickly, the hole on the Meadowlark/Cara Cara is fantastic.

No argument here birds are fantastic , but they get pretty pale compared to a Military , or a CF Caly III , or the old Skool Bob T. Starmate .

All that said , you aren't crazy , ya just need to try a few more Spydies .

I don't think it's fair to compare Byrd knives to a product with 10x the MSRP, and I'm not.  Just 3 very specific instances between analogous, EDC folders.

To be honest with you I don't think I ever handled a Byrd (I have to admit I am turned off by their Comet hole).

But each his own.  There are enough knife manufacturers out there to make a majority of the people happy and like what GG said.

Good sage advice from what is usually a crazy person. :pok: :D (just kidding).

After all there are some people out there that prefer Wenger over Victorinox  :ahhh :D

The CaraCara adds a finger choil to the Endura design, for I like finger choils that is a HUGE benefit of the Byrd. Still, I prefer my Endura, but the Byrd is VERY close!

Dammit, now I'll have to go out and buy all the retiring models.

Well, cheaper than doing it with Spyderco's Seki or Golden lines I guess.

that's right it's a Meadowlark!  :D  So when you say it's no Delica where are you noticing
the big difference?

It's kinda funny you know my "gf" grabs my black stainless Meadowlark
out of my hand the other day and bounces it lightly in her hand and says, "now that's a knife,
it's got some heft to it and looks great."  This after months of saying my colored Spydies look
cheap, and my Emerson's "look ugly and all the same."   They'll never understand.  :P

Well... Emerson's are never going win any beauty pagents, that's for sure.  With my Point Guard given a proper burial (or more likely, going to be modded in to nothingness), my Meadowlark is sharing main EDC duties with my Mini Ambush.

Wish I'd been able to find one in FRN plain edge locally, though.  My wife does think it looks cool though, so that's a plus.

Byrd knives are awesome, while Spyderco knives are definitely a better knife, they are NOT a better deal. Byrds deliver 90% of the performance at 1/3 the price.
