Octane secondary tool lock cover fell off
on: May 25, 2010, 04:32:04 PM
Well I've been wondering how the lock mechanism for the handle implements worked on my Octane and got a chance to find out today.   After a week of daily carry and light use I pocketed my Octane this morning and noticed it felt different.  Took a look and it seems that last night the plastic lock slider at the end of the top handle had come off.  I remember bumping a doorway with my hip last night (being the clumsy oaf that I am) which is probably when it happened.  Found it by checking the pocket of yesterday's jeans - fortunately with the screw still in it.

So I spent 15 minutes this morning looking for my torx set (yes, I need to get organized) and headed to the office.  Half an hour of fiddly work, including installing the thing backwards the first time and removing it again, have given me a good understanding of the lock mechanism...

I tightened the screw on the other handle and checked all the other ones on the tool while I was at it but they all seemed good to me.  Has anyone else had a problem like this?  Anyone have suggestions for me (never used loctite - would it be appropriate for this?  Does it damage plastic, would it gum up the slider mechanism?)

Still really want to like the Octane but I don't quite know...

I've not yet seen an Octane in the flesh, but I think the lock sliders are standard modern Gerber fare.

Loctite thread locker should be OK, just use it sparingly and avoid teh super industrial strength stuff, else you could be buggered :P
I used to come here a lot.

On a recently obtained new Gerber Crucial, after a few days of carrying, I found one of the screws on the plier lock just about out all the way.  I had to visit Sears to pickup the tiny Torx driver to fit the screw head.

I started 2 of them - what can I say, it's my new toy.  You can find them pretty cheap now, pick one up and join the club :).

Loctite requires an absence of air and the presence of steel (iron). If it's a stainless steel screw that screws into plastic, it probably won't work. It's great for an alloy or mild steel screw that threads into a tapped hole or nut of similar properties.

Of course it depends on the type of stainless steel (which is what I'm assuming the screw is made of) and what it's threading into. (steel? plastic? stainless steel?) if it's stainless steel to stainless steel it may work.

You should get a small bottle of Loctite 243 (medium strength) and put a tiny spot on the end of the screw before installing it. Weather it works or not you've got some Loctite around which you will be glad of sooner or later.

I think the bit he's referring to is a steel screw into a steel thread Dave - so he should be OK :)
I used to come here a lot.
