I want to make Lego scales
on: June 19, 2010, 02:12:28 AM
I've never owned a pocket knife before but I've just bought a Victorinox Ranger and I'd like to make my own scales.

I want the Lego surface on the outside of the scales, just so my knife is funky and unique (yet sturdy enough and usuable). Size and practicality aren't my #1 concern here though.

As far as I know, I'll have to choose between three types of Lego piece:
   http://catalog.teacherscenter.com/images/edu/big/TCP/LG9536.gif
   http://site.unbeatablesale.com/img021/edre142.jpg
   http://www.nd.edu/~englearn/lego/2xplates.gif

If I use the full size lego bits (middle link) I'll be trimming them down somehow to make them thinner.

I imagine I'll either end up having the metal bits poking out through holes I'll have made in the Lego piece or else I'll be effectively putting a thin Lego sheet over the metal bits and filling the space in between the Lego sheet and the knife. I might want to reuse my Victorinox logo from the original scales too.

I'll take any advice anyone has 'cause I've never modded a knife before. Even if it's just a link to instructions on how to make scales in general. Could there be any way of doing it without using glue?

Oh and apparently we gave away all our Lego years ago so if anyone wants to send me some, let me know  :)

Thanks - I hope I haven't said anything too stupid.

This sounds interesting.  I imagine the lego scales will feel really grippy... plus if you're ever bored, you can attach lego bricks to the scales and build something.  You can also customize the scales by adding and removing lego pieces.

That will be a sight to see.  Will you put the bumps on one side and the holes on the other?  That way you can hide it in a stack of bricks.

Sounds fun. I'd offer my Legos but my mother "donated" them (I found them in the attic later).
Got those frog legs.

I gave serious consideration to doing just this kind of scale a while back.  What stopped me was I couldn't figure what to do with the edge.  You'd end up with lots of little holes  :-\

My best thinking on the matter was to go with grey plate and use a grey epoxy to attach and fill.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Welcome to the forums and congrats on picking a great knife to be your first one.  I love the idea.  This would be great though because if you do the pegs on one side and the bottom on the other as suggested earlier, it'll open the door for individual layers and making a modular SAK...  AWESOMENESS!!!!!    :sak:

What if you just cut a rectangular or oval cut out in the scales and filled in with lego board.  It would look a little like the pinstripe spartans.

I would go with option 1- option 2 is way too thick and option 3 isn't wide enough really. As Neil said, use epoxy (something close in color) to fill in the inevitable gaps/holes.
