Fenix E01 sanded vs stock reflector
on: June 23, 2010, 11:15:57 PM
Hello everyone.  I have a Fenix E01 flashlight which I got in a trade.  It has a sanded and dull reflector in it which seems to make the light flood without a hotspot.  Would the light be brighter and throw farther if the reflector were shiny?  What are the differences in a flashlight having a dull and sanded reflector vs a shiny reflector?

Just so you know, the LED is sanded, not the reflector.  It is a brushed aluminum cone, not a real reflector.

I have one with a polished (by me) "reflector".  It makes little difference because the beam shape is determined by the "lense" of the 5mm led, not the reflector.

ahhh, thank you sir.  :)  So what would happen if I polish the LED?  I love the light, just wish it were brighter.  Will I lose the flood type beam and gain a hotspot instead?  I like the flood beam on it.  :)

You'll get a tiny bit more throw, and it will still be quite floody.  The hotspot wil no longer be smooth and blended but end up kinda purple and rectangular (the Nichia GS has a rectangular die and E01 all have pretty purple beams).

Go ahead and polish it.  A q-tip and some brasso works well.  Worked well for the cone too if you like.  Just keep in mind it was quite difficult to sand the led and get a good frosted finish like that, so it will be hard to go back.  I had to be very careful, work slowly and protect the cone so as to not scratch it all up.

You could also get another one to compare before you do it.  I like the smooth flood.  I didn't mind the stock beam much tho I know some people hate it.

You won't get a ton more output, but it's worth a shot if you're curious.

shoot, you are right in this case i like the flood beam very much, so i will leave it alone.  :)  The beam is smooth and nice, thanks for this nice flashlight.  How is the Inova X5 working out?  :)

Not here yet!

 :ahhh

I'll have to decide if I want to mod it.  I have a few extra LEDs I can put in.  Maybe some Nichia GS and some neutral-ish crees.

We'll see.  I've never freeze-popped one of these before but I'm curious...

What the heck is going on?  I have the E01 you sent me.  I hope it gets there soon, that is not right.  I still have the little slip of paper that they stamped in my wallet and did not want to get rid of it until I knew you had the light.  :(

Probably easier than getting 5 amps out of 123a without it turn into a pipe bomb.   :P
