Warranty for modded Charge AL
on: July 16, 2010, 11:55:21 AM
I just swapped the blades so that I can use my left hand to open them (I am left handed). It required some grinding so that the blade locks would work and also little notches to the scales for opening the saw and file. It is a lot better for me now.

But what about the warranty? If I manage to break something they probably won't fix it anymore? Even if I swapped the blades back, they will notice the modifications.. Can you buy parts separately from LM?

Also, is there a tool for opening Charge bolts somewhere or do I have to make my own? Do the bolts fit from some other model?

Hi reisrdok - welcome to multitool.org

I'm afraid that as soon as you remove those bolts - the warranty is technically invalid. You might find that your local Leatherman service centre will fix it for, but they are within the terms of the agreement to refuse. Leatherman don't sell replacement parts, although it possible to sometimes find some on this forum, but rarely.

The screws that Leatherman use are proprietary, so you won't be able to buy a tool to undo them (at least none of us have ever found anywhere to buy them). You can use two Kick pocket clips as spanners, which work great on the smaller screws where the scissors and bit driver are, but the screws that hold the external blades are larger, so they are a problem to remove without doing damage I'm afraid.

I hope that helps a bit :)
I used to come here a lot.

Thank you!

There are no service centers in Finland so all the fixing is done in Holland I think.  So next time I manage to break something, I'll just swap the blades back and put a letter with it where I explain the situation (and also beg for mercy) :)
