Obtaining defused light from lights I already own
on: July 14, 2010, 11:00:24 AM
Hello everyone. I own the following lights:

Fenix E01 (one wife's keychain)
Fenix LD01
Preon 2
Quark 123 regular
Surefire C2 P60 incan

Now here is my problem, I am visually impaired (legally blind) and have been this way from birth in both eyes. The problem that I am having is that the lights I have other than the Fenix E01 have a hotspot in the middle of the beam with a dimmer surround to the beam. The E01 has a sanded LED in it (it came to me that way) and has a nice floody/disfused beam, however it is just not bright enough to walk with at say 3 feet. What can i do to defuse the beams of the lights that I already own so I get an even amount on light from a distance of 6 inches to 6 feet or so? I am looking for a beam similar to my E01 or an Inova X5 (these are my only references) that gives me a ball of light with no hotspot. If this can not be done with my current lights, then what is out there that will? I am willing to trade light for light if someone has a flashlight like I am looking for.

Put diffuser film on the lens, I did it on my minimag which is the around house light, and it works great.

I don't know how easily this can be done on the lights you listed, but removing the reflector will cause L E D based flashlights to output a pure flood beam without loosing much output.

The diffuser will be a lot simpler to do tho.

I just found what works the best of all I have tried so far.  Two pieces of frosted Scotch tape over the lens, now I will work on trimming it so that the body is not covered just the lens.  Now I have a greatly reduced hotspot.  :)

Hi Paul! Just a thought but, I think a Maglight 3 D cell might work for you. It is no EDC for sure but, you can adjust it to flood or pure spot light. Just a recomendation if you need it around the house or property.

Yep, scotch tape works well, as do Fellowes WriteRight screen protectors.

I have a 2D and 5D Maglite.  The 2D is just not bright enough and the beam ok and it is nice that you can adjust it.  I have had these lights for many years.  I know I have owned that 5D model for 15 years or more.  Thank you for the advice and help.  :)

Thank you for the great pics and help.  I now have a Fenix P3d so that will be nice and helpful for me.
