Teak scale Spartan [pic heavy]
on:
July 14, 2010, 09:47:31 AM
My very first mod ever on an old spartan i bought off Neil! I thought i would show some pics of the process. Tools used: Belt sander (used upside down
), hand saw and dremel.
<- before sanding
<-these 4 are sort of final
I need to get some fine grit sand paper to finish things off but other than that, i think its not too bad! (thanks neil!
)

Very nice work!
What bond was used to attach the scales?

I used super strength araldite (2 part epoxy resin) and left it for around 16 hours or so

^^You should've borrowed a couple of Neil's hard-working bees to watch over it while it cured... Heheh.

That looks great! Also, instead of buying oil I just used some furniture polish stuff and it looks great. What type of wood did you use?

Very nice! One of my main issues with SAKs (besides the too small, non locking blades) is the scales that IMO aren't too pretty and always have those ugly tootick/tweezer holders on them. This one however, is just stylish all over

I'm not sure what the wood is
I rescued it from a skip it was some very old but straight shelves
Someone tidied their garage and gave me a few tins of left over oil
I have been trying 'teak oil' on most things lately
Mine isn't stylish yet its just covered in glue
Everything’s adjustable

Looks pretty good to me Tony
Let me know if you'd like some liners for template use.

That has got me thinking now
I just drew around the old scales... it was a bit of a fiddle trying to get the holes to line up
Maybe if I do another one I will give you a shout
I am happy with this so far as it was a cheap and slightly knackered SAK from the carboot
I reground the end of the large blade and polished out a lot of scratches
Here it is with the first lot of 'Teak oil'
PS; Furto,
I hope I have not ruined you post Mate!

If you don't have any fine grit sand paper, you could try fine wire wool or plastic kitchen scourers (be carefull this can scratch SS)
Also you can use olive oil on the woodwork
I have been rubbing mine down a bit as it felt a like a brick in my hand
Its a bit better now
They are not so orange in real life
