NEEDED: Large Bit Driver for LM Surge
on: July 22, 2010, 08:04:26 AM
Hey gang. I know it is a long shot but I am looking for a large bit driver for a Leatherman Surge for a current project. I have Surge parts I can trade (large flat driver, awl, can opener, small bit driver, possibly even scissors)... or I can simply pay you in cash. Thanks!

Evil would the Wave/Charge large bit drivers work

I measured the bit driver on my Wave it is smaller than my Surge's
Wave bit driver with out bit in place ; length:27mm
                                                       thickness:5mm
                                                       width:13.2mm

You probably would have more chance getting a beat up Wave that could be a donor
Not sure if the smaller Wave bit driver would work in a Surge though

Hey buddy,

You're right about having more of a chance getting a beat up Wave for a donor, which I may do as a last resort. Not a perfect fit, but I could definitely work with it. By the way, it would not actually be for a Surge. I haven't been able to sell/trade my new ST300 with Surge head so have gone a different direction with it. It has been collecting dust. Either I make it something I will actually use or it goes bye bye  ;) That said, if anyone has a large bit driver of the Wave/Charge size, I will consider it. Thanks!

~ evil ~

UPDATE: I did an actual test fit of the large bit driver from my Wave and with a little modification I can definitely make it work for this project. So, if anyone has one from the Wave/Charge line up let me know. Thanks.....

I have a Surge Bit driver that I would gladly swap for a Wave sized bit driver if that's any help?

I used to come here a lot.

Thanks Dave. I would gladly trade one if I did, since it would better fit this project than the large bit driver from the Wave/Charge series. If you'd be willing to sell the driver, let me know (paypal, cash, money order). Would you consider a direct bolt in awl for a Wave? (no modifications needed to your tool) It is a ST300 awl that I modified as a direct swap for the large flat driver in the Wave. Some have expressed how they wish they had a proper awl on their Wave, not just a modified flat driver. I had this one sitting around so I thought I would modify it and is about 95% done. I actually have no use for it when it is completed since I fabricated my monster sized awl for my Wave, but that one involved modding to the tool as well for clearance, otherwise I would possibly make more of them to sell/trade. This one will be a direct swap. I will be posting it soon.....

On an unrelated project... by the way Dave. Question for you since you are far more familiar with all of the other models. Which models, if any, have dedicated drivers that I can swap into a new style Wave? (especially the long phillip driver and if you have one would you part with it?) Thanks for any input.....

For consideration after dave, of course, I have an ALX and could let you take a driver from it.  I'm interested in the ST300 awl.

I see a triangular trade forming here......

You send me the ALX driver, I send Evil the Surge driver, and Evil sends you the awl! Everyone's a winner :tu:

If that works for everyone say aye and we'll go to PMs and start swapping addresses!

@ Evil - I'll chuck in a dedicated Phillips - I have a few of them as it happens, consider it covered :)

I used to come here a lot.

This is sounding good.  However, I don't have a way to take my tools apart...but there are options:

If i send Dave the entire charge, you could do the dirty work because you have the tools, right? If not, I can try to pull it apart on my own.  Since I have my wave, I don't need the charge, and I was debating swapping the charge blade for the wave's blade. So how shall we go about this? I can rip the driver out on my own and send it, or I can send the whole charge to Dave.  All I would really want back is the main blade, so if either of you want to scavenge more parts off it we could work something out.  Any other thoughts or interest in other parts of a charge?  It has 2 bitdrivers on it, so mod fodder galore! I get a dream wave, and you guys get the parts you seek and extras if you want...

Looking forward to seeing the Awl modification, and discussing this some more!

Just posted the ST300 awl mod. Either Dave or I could take it apart or swap your blades, etc. Whatever is convenient for everyone. You both can sort out whichever parts you'd like. Any leftover parts I could always put to good use.....

Thanks. I just gave it a bead blasting to give it a nice matte finish to blend in seamlessly with your other tools. Will post another pic shortly. Let's get this triangle going.....

Sorry guys, been a bit busy with so called "real world" stuff, but I'm back now :D

Looks like we're on for this triangular trade then - cool :tu:

Just a thought, is it worth posting the Charge trans-atlantic to do the switching about, or would it be cheaper to post it to the US? I'm genuinely not sure on that one, but posting the Charge, with awl fitted to Canada, plus the Surge bit driver and phillips to the US starts to get a bit pricey....

Is there an obviously "most efficient" way of doing this do you think?

Hmm. Well if evil can take apart the charge than I can send it to him to take a driver out. It may prove easier for me to just take it out myself, however I'm not sure I will. I can certainly try something!

A couple of Kick pocket clips to use as spanners might be cheaper than postage to the US and then you can take lots of LMs apart in the future as a bonus ;)

Just a thought :)

True. If you are not in a major rush to get the driver, I can get the clips and than send the driver. Let's do it that way if you are good with waiting for me to get the clips. In fact, I think I can buy them at Cabellas too.

If Charger takes apart, we all just send once. Me>>Charger>>DaveK

If Charger sends to either me or DaveK for disassembly, that person will have to send out twice...

I am glad to take it apart for you. But so I only have to send out two times instead of three, I'll delay sending the new awl and you could send the Charge to me, I'll dismantle it and send back whatever parts you wanted plus the new awl... and then another send to Dave for the parts he wanted off of it. If you go this route, I will have it dismantled and parts sent out the same day. Then Dave can send to me. If you want to get the spanners to do the work yourself and have parts galore, that is fine too... as Dave said, you'll have parts for the future. DaveK will be the one waiting for his Charge bit driver from you until you get the work done. If you go this route, let me know. In good faith, I will send out the awl tomorrow.....

Thoughts?

Ok so we will leave this up to Dave. If he can wait until I get the spanners, I will do it that way. If he would rather have me send it to get it taken apart we can do that. I will give you my word that I will get that driver to you as soon as I can though.

I send you the awl. You dismantle your Charge and send the large bit driver to Dave. Dave sends Surge bit driver to me. Sounds good to me. By the way, Dave... I'll return the good karma in the future for the dedicated phillips  :salute:

Charger, PM me your mailing info and consider the awl on the way first thing tomorrow.....
