Of course a box of matches costs 20p and offers the same performance and runtimes :D

But I know there's probably a few diehards out there who like them :)
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

Funnily enough that's exactly how I think of mine, just somewhere to keep a spare AAA in case the one in my torch runs out. ;)  I do still have a soft spot for them though and I really wish someone would come up with a nice drop-in or, even better, wish Maglite would come up with a new LED version of their own.

There was a drop in available some time back but I've no idea if you can still get it.    It cost about the same as a AAA torch :)

I suppose you could always retrofit a 1.5V red LED.  It'd be your AAA holder and ultra ultra low lumen night light then :P   The runtime would be phenomenal though.

My solitaire is from the late 80's and back then it was the bees knees to me,well it was about the only flashlight you could get in the UK and it was brighter than a match now tho matches seem to have moved on and are much brighter  ::)

OK so I had to do it. :-[  Yes the run time is woeful, but I do like my little Solitaire and all it does is sit in a tin looking rejected, what else could I do? ;)

Easy:  get a Fenix E01 and put the Solitaire in your nightstand for a night-time-trip-to-the-loo-light. :salute: :)

lol.  :D  TBH, as it was, the Solitaire wasn't even worth that.  Yes, the E01 is no doubt the better option, but I also have an L0D and a LM Monarch 300, so it's not like I don't have the 1xAAA department covered.  This is just about making a last ditch effort to breath some like into a little light that actually managed to serve me well for a few years.  Pure sentimentalism. :)

What's more sentimental than having it purposed for night time loo runs, then? :P

Are you insinuation I have bladder problems?  Just how old do you think I am anyway?  ;)  :D  Truthfully I can't think of the last time I had to get up in the middle of the night and I make no preparations to do so. :)

[kid voice]You're a bazillion years old, Mister![/kid voice] XD

Nah, I make no insinuations whatsoever; even college kids, however, need to get up to use the loo in the middle of the night from time to time, though. :P  At least here where the only windows are in the bedrooms and living room, you do need some form of illumination to make it to the bathroom; well, and then you have slow-warming CFLs to not utterly kill your night vision. :salute:

Well I just got the little drop-in just now and first impressions are OK. :)

Bluish tinge to the light, but nothing awful.  Keeps some if the focusable range of the standard lamp but due to the thickness of the drop-in base the head of the Solitaire doesn't screw down as far as it used to, thus giving less thread to play with (does that make sense?).  You still get many of the rings in the beam that are normal in Maglite's smooth reflector but you can get a tidy enough spot.  The light level is OK, certainly not more than the 13.5 lumen advertised, but enough to make a dark corner light and that's surely the main point. :)

As I really did not want to part with my Solitaire,I decided to try one of these drop ins.It came in less than a fortnight, which is good considering the state of our post over the holiday period.
I would like to echo pretty much everything that Gareth says above.I will have to see how long the run time is,but it is only a keychain torch after all.If I know I am going to need a torch I take a bigger one with me.
