Got my first 84mm in today, small Tinker. I have to say, this might be my favorite size of all. It took me all of 5 minutes from opening the package to grinding of that infernal split-ring attachment  :twak:

 :woohoo: :woohoo:

Congrat's...   :like: :hatsoff:

For me it IS my favorite size, bar none...  :salute:

(Image removed from quote.)

It feels so great in hand and I can't put it down.
I just love how compact it is without sacrificing any of the utility of the 91mm patterns. Everything feels so tight and more impressive in this smaller package.
I feel like I opened a can of worms with this one, I'm already. thinking about 85mm saws and scissors and possible mods  :ahhh

Cool!

I'm guessing you didn't buy that one online/in a shop?
That's an 80's feature IIRC...

That's the (vintage) Phillips with the can opener....   :ahhh  I'll bet you anything your awl doesn't have the sewing hole too... Did you buy it new in store, or "as new" from someone?  If so, it's a major score...  :woohoo:

I think they only changed the Phillips/awl to the current version on the 84mm's on the late 90's. I remember back is 2006 or so on e-bay, when i got my two used (vintage) small tinker's (80's and 90's) , i found an online store at e-bay and the guy had a generic pic of the older model and i asked if he had any one of those (awl with no hole) left or if it was just the newer model, he told me he had plenty of both models... and i end up not ordering any at the time, don't even remember why anymore... Been kicking myself ever since....   :twak:

Brand new in box "older" small Tinkers..... Solid scales, thicker blade tang with the crossbow, Phillips with can opener, older style awl with no hole that sits a bit flush'er with the back of the knife....   And i didn't order every single one of them at the time on sight... was dirt cheap too, i remeber.....    I'm an idiot....  :twak: :twak: :twak:

Excuse me... going to get wasted now.....  :drink:

BTW.... can you post a pic of the nail nick side of the awl, so we can see if it's the 70's/80's or the 80's/90's version, please...  :D

It's a so called "can key" to open up food cans with metal closing strips. (Will look up an example pic in a minute).
The current Philips drivers don't have that slot any more since those types of cans are rarely encountered anymore.

This means that your specimen has got a discontinued Philips driver.

Like the fluted corkscrews, this doensn't add to the usefullness, but it's nice to have it as an extra.

You still get them occasionally in the UK... the cans I mean.

Ohhhhh, that was a cool feature. I remember some of the other countries using that type key on their ammo cans. Thanks for information.  :like:

Yep, traded a Case jack knife for this one to a member on another board. It is in new condition and appears to never have been used or sharpened. I assumed i was getting a modern version until I saw the crossbow and "Victorinox Switzerland Stainless Rostfrei" blade stamps.
No awl hole, solid scales and that older style can opener.
I've only recently learned about the can key Phillips, so I was excited when the light revealed the slot in this one  :climber:

The hole in the reamer was added in 1985 so I'd say 1980-1985 ;)

Nope....   :pok:
That would be maybe true for the 91mm's, but you can't really date/evaluate the 84mm's based on that... the 84's followed a completely different time line tool wise. They kept using the old 91mm awl and Phillips till much, much later.
The Awl (same used on the 91's after 85) with the hole was only added/updated on the 84mm's in the late 90's or even maybe early 2000's, they have also kept the solid scales (no pin hole) till that time too.
The 90 degree stop on the 84's was only added, like, much less than 10 years ago...

My last SAK is a Tinker assembled at the store with yellow and blue scales (i received already enough insults for that, be nice) and my nickname on it. It's a bit "touristic" but i like it

The yellow & blue scales look like a good combination.  I have some SAKs with all yellow scales and others with all blue scales but haven't seen them mixed until now.

I like the blue yellow scales BTW.
