Any thoughts on this? http://www.surplusstore.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/88/products_id/569

Claims to be UK legal but why do I think I'd end up in a world of poo if I carried some?

It depends what one you carry, there are a few that have been given the ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) seal of approval and are perfectly OK to carry as they contain no noxious substances and cause no ill effects.

However if you do use a defensive marker spray you could get in trouble for an act of criminal damage....

As an aside, in relation to planning for the Olympics there is a very strong chance these sprays will be issued to the "security volunteers"....

If they are fine then I'd want to get a couple, especially for the wife as she goes on long walks.

No offence meant, but if someone sprayed red dye in my face then it would take it to a whole other level, damn I would be pissed.
Better to get her a hairspray I think, that will sting alot in the eyes.

These are the guys I have had contact with http://www.redwebsecurity.com/products/offender-id

I actually had the spray in your first post and found it quite useless upon testing, the RedWeb one is much better as it contains a unique DNA code that can be traced after someone is arrested.

The pressure will shock an attacker and the spray will foam up temporarily disorientating an attacker.

All that from a little tin can? Not unless you are attacked by a fly. You'll probably have better luck with this or this.

Bad idea.  When attacked with chemical sprays, attackers tend to move forward and grasp rather than reel back.  A better option would be a strong light, as you reflexively flinch from it.

Using that logic no one would ever carry anything!  :D

The wife already has the torch.  This would be in addition to that, not solely relied on.

Bad men have been known to leave bad areas to visit violence upon good people living in good areas from time to time,it's worth bearing that in mind  ;)

As we are so restricted about what we can carry, I would say it does no harm in carrying it. As to its effectiveness, nothing is foolproof. If you are in a situation where you have no choice but to defend yourself, if the spray works, it is a bonus. If it does not, you are no worse off.

We had a case here a couple of years back where a woman successfully used one of these sprays to fend off a would be sex attacker. He was caught hours later with his face still half covered in this stuff.

I would suggest that you do a pressure test scenario. Get one of these sprays, attack you wife, and see what happens when she sprays you.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.
