Leatherman Style CS = great little keychain tool!
on: July 13, 2010, 09:30:02 PM
I rarely purchase an item (of any sort) that I like enough to want to start a internet thread about (or at least one that doesn't already have many threads about it already).  But it doesn't seem like there is too much talk about the new Style CS, and IMO it is one of the best little tools to come around in a long while.

I've tried all sorts of keychain tools...SAK Classic, Mini-Champ, Rambler, Leatherman P4, Micra, etc.  I originally had the SAK Classic (hasn't everyone?) but I wanted a little more function.  I tried the Mini-Classic, and that was too big and had some tools I could do without, so I settled on a Rambler.  I liked it a LOT, but the scissors would frequently gum up and not spring back open and the bottle opener wasn't that great (great little philips screwdriver, though).  I found Leatherman's offerings to generally be too heavy.  I tried to like the Micra (it seems many do) but to me most of the tools were too fragile (for what I tried to do with them), the scissors on the several I had weren't all that great, and it just seemed really heavy.

Also, a big reason I never really used a keychain tool was because it was always attached to a big chunk of keys that constantly got in the way whenever I tried to use it.  I always looked to something else I was carrying to do a job, but I always kept one on my keychain as a last resort.

When the Style CS came out I decided to try out "another" keychain too.  I quickly found that it seemed lighter than the Micra and had a really useable pair of scissors.  It has a good pair of detachable tweezers that were much better than the Micra's and are on par with an SAK.

Most importantly, though, I could quickly detach it from my keychain whenever I wanted to use it.

I didn't care much for the blade at first but after resharpening it from a chisel grind to a wedge grind, I find it pretty handy.  Reshaping it also made it much more useable for a lefty.

Anyways, I know that I find it very helpful reading peoples' experiences about different products and I wanted to give my point of view.  Hopefully it will help those on the fence about whether they would like the Style CS.

How's the scissor compare to micra? I may get one to replace the micra on my keychain. And you actually prefer a chisel grind eh?

I've only had my CS for a few days, and I really like it. I haven't been this impressed with a tool since I got my first Leatherman Charge!
I used to come here a lot.

Thanks for catching my error!  I meant to say I changed it from the chisel grind to a wedge grind. I have corrected my error.  I bet you were surprised to hear someone say they preferred a chisel grind!

As far as the scissors, they appear to be just about identical.  However, and this may just be on the (several) Micras I had, it seems to me that these are much more precise.  In several instances with the Micra I was unable to cut something small but tough.  It would separate the blades as they folded and get lodged between.  The scissors on the Style CS don't seem to do that.  They seem to cut as precisely as an SAK but are a lot sturdier.

I think the scissors are the same as were used on the Squirt S4 - I'll go check :)

EDIT: Yes they are :)

Hehe yes I was. The first thing I did with micra and squirt was change the blade grind, looks like I'll be doing the same to style when I get one.

Not a major Keychain MT carrier but I like the look of the Style CS will continue to keep up with it and maybe I just might pick 1 up :D

Has any of you Style CS owners tried cutting off the carabiner? In other words turn it into a freestyle with scissors
