MT factory tours
on: August 22, 2010, 12:34:48 AM
These videos should be familiar to many here (one was posted just days ago) but I thought it would be a good idea to post them all in one place (there are probably more from other manufacturers too, if you know any just post them).

How it's made: Swiss Army Knife (Victorinox):

Victorinox factory tour (by Victorinox):

For Leatherman,

I've been there a coupla times.  It's basically on the way to my Mom's house when I fly back to Portland. (Actually, it's on the way to ANYWHERE, if you fly into PDX... ;))

I love all those factory tour videos. There are so many cool operations being done. I'm sure the work itself must be mind-numblingly repetitious for the folks that do it every day, but I find it fascinating. :)

When I first saw the Leatherman one I was genuinely surprised that there was so much 'human contact'  :tu:

Must go and check out the others now :D

Thank you for posting those videos. In a recent postings, I modified an ST300 awl to fit a Wave that then got traded to another member here. He commented on the tight fit of the locking notch that I had made and I replied.....

Quote
I like all of my tools to lock up tight with no play. I fabricate my notches to a .001" tolerance whereas I am guessing Leatherman goes with something more along the lines of .005"

At the time I posted that, .005" of a tolerance was just my educated guess of Leatherman standards. After having seen the LM factory tour videos, it just validated what I thought to be true. In one of the videos they specifically mention that measurement.....  :tu:
