What MT tool is your favorite?
on: August 16, 2010, 11:49:27 PM
So, what is your favorite tool on any multitool? Blade, scissors, tweezers - what is some of your favorite tools and why?

For me, the blade is the obvious winner, as I think it is for many people. After that, I must say that while I hated scissors just a couple of weeks ago, I've come around since getting the Wave and Vic Climber. My previous dislikings for the scissors were based on inferior fakes from long ago, and the tools i've had for the last 5-10 years haven't had scissors. The scissors were much more stable and high quality than I'd thought and they really are very useful.

Third for me would probably be a bit driver. That's the part I love on both my Skeletools and Wave and with a third part full sized hex bits set and the bit adapter it's really useful - not for EDC stuff as much as work and repair stuff tasks. Like the LM lady on youtube says, the full sized tool is the one you bring when you know what you need it for.

On the bottom of my list is definitely toothpicks. Tweezers are almost as useless to me personally, which is why I use wood scales on my SAKs. As for integrated tools, I find that screwdrivers (flat and phillips) are rather useless on tools that are big enough to hold a bit driver. Also not a fan of nailclippers and nailfiles

I don't have a single favorite tool, but I appreciate a good set of various sized screwdrivers including phillips.  I also prefer a tool have an awl if possible.

File.  I carry Leatherman's almost exclusively for my full-size MTs because of their diamond file.

Pliers.  Otherwise I'd just have a pocket knife, right?

I do enjoy the saw, although some will call me crazy for that. I think of a tool as something that I can bring out with me in one package, so a decent saw on a SAK or multi is enough for anything I need for overnighters. If I go longer I have a folding saw, pretty handy for in basecamp situations.

Most used would be scissors but I'd have to say pliers too for a MT :)

I'll be the odd duck and say the scraper on the swisstool. One of the machines I run is a starch extruder, for making the bio-degradable packing p-nuts. It is worth its weight in gold for scraping off burned on starch and/or plastic. The plastic is used on start up and shut down to purge the barrel, it re-melts when heated without sticking to the barrel or screw and will "flow". Problem is when it crashes on a start up you get all that lovely goo all up in there that needs to be removed...

pliers, bit driver, cutting hook, diamond file, metal file, saw,

although i can honestly say that i have at some point needed every tool on my ChALX, and having used them all i find it unlikey that i would switch to a different main edc tool. and yes 2 bit drivers are that important to me. i find my self working with a lot of equipment that seems to used nearly every fastener head known to man.

and

Depends on the tool , on the Wave it's the serrated blade , on the Spirit it's the chisel scraper thing . The pliers are rarely used .

You didn't say most used, you said favorite.

In that case, my favorite is the barometer on the XAVT.  :D

On the farm, the tools on my Farmer get the most use (Saw, followed by blade, awl, cap lifter and finally can opener).  On weekends, all those tools get used every day.  Add the Skeletool for general farm work (and CRKT Guppie) and that covers 90-95% of the tools I use on the farm.  Swap the Charge for the Skeletool when doing electrical/construction work (or motorcycle work--Allen bits).

Pliers are certainly my favorite tool on a MT, hence why I'm not much into SAKs.  After pliers I'd say the wood saw, LM phillips driver, and serrerated knife.

Most used would be a tie between PE knife and pliers.

Least favorite is can opener/cap lifter and mini bit driver.

This is a tough one.  I am not sure I can say that I have a favorite tool on a multi or SAK, however I do have a favorite multi and SAK.  The Leatherman Wave is a my best multi that I own because of the outside accessible blades, the bit driver, and scissors.  My favorite SAK is the Deluxe Tinker because it is a jack of all trades.
When In doubt, C4

I'd have to say a good set of scissors.  Vic manage very well, except of the set found on the Spirit. :-\  Not that they don't work, just that they're poor in comparison to the rest of Vic's scissors.  Leatherman also manage to put out a good set as well.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

The Shackle opener\marlin spike on my Vic Skipper.

Not that I have ever opened a shackle with it, but it has many odd uses like prying thumb tacks and staples, opening cans that the tab has come off etc'
