91mm SAK brass rods
on: August 31, 2010, 01:50:45 PM
I'm in a bit of a pickle, I've bought some brass rod and discovered after all the cutting to length, peaning of ends etc that its not 2.2mm dia but a slender 2mm instead.

Can I use this on a 91mm SAK or should I continue searching for the thicker stuff?

Edit:
I do have a local suppy of 2.3mm would that be any good?

2mm will work but you may lose some snap.  I wouldn't.  2.3 will work if it'll fit through the holes OK.  If it won't you can turn it down a fraction by mounting it in a drill and using sandpaper.

Did you get the 2mm from me?  I do check the rods with my callipers before chopping up but I am only human  :-\

You're in the clear on this one Neil  ;)

I used all the 2.2mm stock you sent me and grabbed what I thought was a bargain when I needed more.  In fact it was only by comparing this batch to the off cut I had left from you that I spotted what they had sold to me.

You can do what I did last time...take a can opener and a sidepanel with you, and slide them over the brass rod to see if it fits at the store.  I built a single layer with some slightly-under 2.2mm and it still has snap and no wiggle.
Half-ass done wholeheartedly!

If the 2.3 stock is to thick you can turn it down using a drill or a drill press and a file or emery cloth.

Phew :D    If the 2.3mm stock is cheap grab it and turn down. You might also be lucky as most stock has some variance and it might just fit.

You can always save the 2mm stuff to have a play with the 74mm frame SAKs :tu:
